In his column in the De-
troit Free Press, Sept. 15,
Judd Arnett wrote his im-
pressions of Prime Minister
Menahem Begin. Quoting
Arnett:
"There are occasions
when he must sound ultra
hard-nosed and cantanker-
ous to many Americans, but
from this distance it is easy
to overlook where he comes
from and what his respon-
sibilities are.
"We have little sense of
being beleaguered, of get-
ting up in the morning and
wondering whether we will
survive another day, let
alone another month, and
this sort of pressure has to
narrow your perspective
when Election Day rolls
around.
"It becomes a question
not of which candidate
has the most hair on his
head, but which one has
the greater amount of
steel in his backbone.
This is why Israel has
produced a series of
tough-minded, hard-
spoken leaders.
'Over here, for example,
the late Golda Meir may
have been looked upon as a
sweet grandmotherly type,
but over there it was under-
stood that she could be nas-
tier than a truckload of
wildcats. Menahem Begin
might have trouble getting
elected to the Michigan
Legislature, but that is of no
consequence.
"He has been able to put
together a coalition gov-
ernment because it is the
judgement of his peers that
they need him for the nonce,
and very few of us have the
back-ground and intimate
knowledge to challenge
such a decision."
