THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, September 18, 1981 21 'Double Standards' Is Second Novel By Mrs. Hellman "Double Standards" ,- (Doubleday), is the second novel written by Aviva Hellman, wife of Yehuda Hellman, the executive di- rector of the Conference of Presidents of Major Ameri- can Jewish Organizations. Although "In Place of Love," Mrs. Hellman's first -novel, sold nearly 200,000 copies, the author admits that her husband is not a reader of fiction. "Yehuda's world is politics, foreign af- fairs, reports and docu- ments," she said. "He has never read any of my books . . . but he loves to tell people that his wife writes novels." "Double Standards" is the story of a woman who gave up her identity, personal ambitions and needs for the sake of her husband, home' and children, only to find_ herself alone and out of step with the times. Set in the social and political circles of New York and Europe, Mrs. Hellman details the life of Beth Van Ess, who in the 1950s marries Adam Stillman, a liberal Jewish lawyer. Years later, set- tled into a state of con- tentment, she is suddenly faced with Adam's deci- sion to leave her for a woman half her age. She is left to ponder what went wrong and how she will survive. The book offers a portrait of the rapidly changing morals and manners of the last three decades and their effect on women who grew up in a more defined era. 0 ikqb ..9 "" a alas 0 \ Inn t pagona. win G N1413 000 .000 AND THE GRAND PRIZE Is $1,000,000! The uproar increased yet further when one of the Likud members was ar- rested, but died down somewhat when the con- vention president per- suaded the police to release him but bar him from re- entering the hall.
