Gen. Rafael Eltan, criticizing him for remarks about the instability of Presideift Anwar Sadat's regime and the Israeli- Egyptian peace process he reportedly made last week in an address at Givat Olga near Hadera. Maariv quoted him as saying: "We should not be deluded by false hopes. There is peace with Egypt. But is is in danger. There is unrest in Egypt and Sadat could go and everything would be over. In Egypt, ev- erything depends on one man." - The army spokesman de- nied that Eitan had made these remarks, saying he had been misquoted. But the correspondent of Maariv, who was present at the Givat Olga meeting, said that his report was completely accurate and that he had presented a full literal quotation. The paper supported its correspone;ent in an editorial which said that a chief of staff should be "man enough to admit frankly to mistakes." Meanwhile. Begin re- jected the assertion that continuation of the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty depended upon President Anwar Sadat staying in power. "I don't think that an in- ternational agreement de- pends on anybody," Begin said. "What we (he and Sadat) used to say to each other was we are mortals, our nations are eternal." The premier also rejected the idea that Sadat could "disappear" soon from the Egyptian scene. He said he believed the Egyptian President had the over- whelming support of his people. can Christian leader with whom to counsel was a mis- take, and that the prime minister has not been well advised about the realities of American Christian pub- lic opinion. This is not to minimize for a moment the value of a Begin-Falwell "sum- mit," nor is it to take for granted the value of Fundamentalist support which Israel badly needs. There are, however, some 130 million American Christians — Catholics, mainline Protestants and Evangelicals — whose support for Israel and Jewish causes need to be cultivated and not alienated. We counseled high Israeli authorities last week to use Begin's presence to welcome both mainline Christian support as well as Rev. Fal- well's, and we are delighted to see that Prime Minister Begin has finally gotten around to seeing the wis- dom of that broad ecumeni- cal course.
