The tone for the unprece- dented dialogue session of Orthodox Jewish leaders with UN officials was set by Rabbi Moshe Sherer, president of Agudath Israel of America and chairman of the Agudath Israel World Organization, who intro- duced the 125 Orthodox Jewish leaders from 10 states to Secretary General Kurt Waldheim and other UN officers. He said the goal of the mission was "to see and be seen and to hear and be heard." Rabbi Sherer said that Agudath Israel's "intensive involvement on behalf of Jews internationally made the dialogue with UN offi- cials essential, especially since the views of Orthodox Jews are so often misun- derstood." He told the UN officials, "Please do not mis- interpret the fact that Agudath Israel has basic ideological disagreements with the Israeli govern- ment; on the safety and se- curity of Israel, we are united and speak with one voice with all of the Jewish people." Speaking to the group in the United Nation's Economic and Social- Council chamber, the Secretary General rec- ognized Agudath Israel's 33-year membership as a non-governmental member of the interna- tional body. Dr. Wal- dheim mentioned the Holocaust as a reason for the UN's existence which prompted one of the delegates to wonder why the UN does not give any recognition to memorializing the tragic events of less than four decades ago. The Secretary's discus- sion of UN successes in human rights was also chal- lenged by the Agudath Is- rael delegation. One delgate quhart, for special political affairs, who discussed UN Middle East policy. Joining in the criticism of the UN was Ambassador Charles M. Lichenstein, the alternate U.S. representa- tive, who said that the world body "instead of putting out fires, often helps fuel them." Representing Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick who par- ticipated in the Washington talks with Prime Minister Begin, Lichenstein spoke of the "special friendship be- tween the US. and Israel." Several Agudath Israel representatives chal- lenged the "effectiveness of the UN peace forces" stressing that they were there at the whim of the Arab countries. Their in- ability to halt PLO infilt- ration in southern Leba- non was cited as an example of their inept- ness. Urquhart defended ac- cusations that the UN Secretariant was selective in the issues it chooses to raise, while hiding behind so-called UN resolutions to support its prejudices. He also rejected contentions that the Secretariat was not "evenhanded" in its Middle East policies. The sharpest criticism of the day was levelled by Is- rael's permanent represen- tative, Ambassador Yehuda Rainbow Square 29429 W. 12 Mile (Near Middlebelt) Farmington Hills 476-8480 CURB SERVICE OPEN 7 DAYS • 19827 W. 12 Mile • Southfield 552-8480 Buy 2 Pkgs. of Vacuum Bogs & GET ONE FREE $5 OFF LABOR ON ANY VACUUM REPAIR (Of SIO or More) With This Coupon Expires IIIXV111 $3.00 OFF PARTS 11111 MIAS/ FillNUE e.ith this ad. exp. 9 - 3041 I BOND COPIES MADE 1 5' ••di Blum. Calling UN head- quarters "the building of anti-Semitism," he cited examples of blatant anti- Semitism in recent General Assembly debates. The Is- raeli diplomat said, "After the Holocaust, it still isn't 'in' to attack the Jew so in- stead it. is 'Zionism,' but they mean Jews." Speaking about the up- coming 36th session of the General Assembly, Blum said that Islamic, Third World and eastern bloc na- tions will attempt "to con- tinue the process of de- ligitimization of the 'Jewish people." In response to a question, he said that an 'Israeli withdrawal from the UN would merely play into the -hands of those forces who seek to render Is- rael illegitimate." In the continued ex- change between Waldheim and the Orthodox Jewish group, the Secretary Gen- eral said that the "anti- Semitism in the UN reflects its existence on the world scene."
