THE MAW EHISII,NMS., 18 Friday, September 11, 191)1 Detroit Olim Hold Reunion NATANYA — The Asso- ciation of Americans and Canadians in Israel spon- sored a reunion this sum- mer of Detroit olim. One of the sponsors of the event, which drew more than 100 former Detroiters, was Harmon S. Bayer, founder of the Detroit Chap- ter of the Association of Parents of Americans in Is- rael. The APAI has been lobby- ing Jewish federations in the U.S. to support Ameri- cans who make aliya to Is- rael. The group says only 20 percent of Americans re- main in Israel while 80 per- cent of those from Great Britain, South Africa and Australia remain perme- nently. The group believes that federation support simi- lar to Great Britain, South Africa and Au- stralia in the early years of aliya would make a major difference. Among those attending the reunion were: Esther Goldberg, a teacher in Haifa Univer- sity's preparatory program, and her husband Sanford, financial director of Paz- Oil; Marilyn Grant, a voca- tional sociologist and man- power development spe- cialist, and her husband Murray, director of market- ing promotion for Koor Trades; Phyllis Rosenbaum Cohen, a teacher of scien- tific and technical English; Prof. Robert Rockaway, professor of American Jewish history at Tel Aviv University; Bezalel "Buzzy" Gordon, a journalist in Jerusalem; Norman Platt, a lawyer, and his wife Rita, a teacher of English and Spanish; Mrs. Rae Goodman, a Hebrew teacher formerly with United Hebrew Schools, and her daugh- ter Ruth; Yitzhak (Eugene) Green- field, former owner of Greenfield Specialty Noodle Co. in Detroit; Asher Tarmon, director of Jewish Welfare Board headquarters in Jerusalem; and Ray Levin, whose wife Barbara is a former De- troiter. Levin is assistant to the head of the Aliya De- partment of the World Zionist Organization.
