AJC Combats
Bias in Clubs

NEW YORK — Charging

that social club discrimin-
ation — city or country
clubs that bar certain
people from membershiri
solely for reasons of race,
gender, religion, or national
origin— was "one of the last
vestiges of institutional
bigotry in American
society," the American
Jewish Committee has is-
sued a booklet aimed at
helping forces within the
U.S. to combat such dis-
crimination.
The eight-page booklet,
titled "The Public Disgrace
of Private Club Discrimina-
tion: A Guide to Action,"
was prepared by Maureen
Schild and Burt A. Siegel of
the Discrimination Division
of AJC's Domestic Affairs
Department. It explains
that the issue, which has
concerned the American
Jewish Committee for more
than two decades, has taken
on new urgency in recent
years because of new civil
rights law and the move-
ment of numbers of women
into high-level career posi-
tions.
Through its Committee
on Social Discrimination,
the AJCommittee suggests
five "effective strategies" in
combatting such social club
discrimination: monitoring
and exposing discriminat-
ory practices, supporting
corrective legislation,
encouraging corporate re-
sponsibility, enlisting pri-
vate institutions and in-
forming the media.

`Time' Essay
Hits Begin

NEW YORK — The Aug.
31 issue of Time Magazine
contains an attack of Israeli
Prime Minister Menahem
Begin by Time correspon-
dent Strobe Talbott:
Talbott's essay, "What to
do About Israel," also ad-
vises President Reagan to
abandon the idea that Israel
constitutes a strategic asset
to the U.S. in the Middle
East. The essay was printed
less than a week before the
Israeli Prime Minister
traveled to Washington to
meet the President.

You cannot do a kindness
too soon, for you never know
how soon it will be too late.
