U.S. Must Use Most Favored Nation' Status
to Keep Romanian Gates Open for Its Jews

Editor, The Jewish News
Several months ago I had
the opportunity to meet
Chief Rabbi Moses Rosen
and numerous other mem-
bers of the Romanian
Jewish community in
Bucharest.
It is interesting to note
that, although Rabbi Rosen
has made remarkable ef-
forts, many young Jewish
Romanians believe it is the
Communist government's
desire to maintain its "Most
Favored Nation" status that

accounts for a substantial
part of its "liberal" attitude
towards Jewish emigration.
We would not overlook
the fact that many, if not
most, of the remaining
young Jews in Romania
wish to emigrate and
Jewish emigration from
Romania has been declining
in recent months.

Houston Thanked
for Patient Visits

Editor, The Jewish News:
Recently, I required hos-
pitalization at the Texas
Heart Institute in Houston.
While a patient there it was
with a great deal of pleasure
that I was visited daily by
the members of the Jewish
Federation of Greater
Houston. .I think that what
they do in reference to out-
of-town patients in the hos-
pital at the Texas Medical
Center should be com-
plimented.
They certainly brought a
smile to my face, and les-
sened the apprehension
that I had, and made my
stay at the hospital one fil-
led with warmth and satis-
faction.

In fact, as the National
Council of Soviet Jewry and
Bnai Brith International
told a House Ways and
Means subcommittee on
trade, which is considering
an extension of "Most Fa-
vored Nation" status to
Romania, there is a large
backload of cases,-number-
ing approximately 525, of
Romanian Jews seeking to
emigrate.
In that connection, it has
been urged that the sub-
committee's recommenda-
tion of extension of
Romania's "Most Favored
Nation" status be continued
on eliminating the existing
backlog of cases and permit-
ting increased emigration of
Jews from Romania.

Bnai Brith Hit
for Brandt Honor

Editor, The Jewish News
When I recently read that
Herr Willy Brandt, former
German Chancellor, was
announced as the winner of
the Gold Medallion for
Humanitarianism Award, I
first thought that the honor
was being bestowed by King
Khalid of Saudi Arabia. To
my disgust, I discovered
that Bnai Brith Interna-
tional was, in fact, giving
this honor.
My anger over this situa-
tion stems not from Brandt
being a German leader (he
himself fled the Nazis dur-
ing the Hitler era) but be-
cause he has aligned him-
self with Hitler's heir to the
"Crown of Blood," Yasir
Arafat, leader of the modern
day Einsatzgruppen known
as the PLO.
In 1979, Helmut Schmidt
and Herr Brandt along with
the most perfidious Jew in
the world today, Bruno
Kreisky, embraced Arafat's
ultimate goal of drawing a
chalk line around Israel . .
the same way homicide in-
vestigators outline a mur-
der victim's body.
The same Herr Brandt
who once knelt in contri-
tion before the memorial
to the Jewish victims of
the Holocaust, now con-
fers, in publicized friend-
ship with Hitler's suc-
cessor in the deliberate
murder of Jewish chil-
dren.
Brand't selection by Bnai
Brith is a political, social
and moral obscenity. I urge
Bnai Brith International to
refrain from bestowing its
"honor" on Herr Brandt.

Bnai Brith member,
Philadelphia
