the entire Middle East
ready and willing to give
the United States whatever
it has that we need to defend
our interests, notably our
oil sources, in the Persian
Gulf area.
The big brass making pol-
icy in the Reagan Adminis-
tration dreams of a
"stragegic consensus" of the
Persian Gulf states in de-
fense of the area against
Soviet encroachment. It
persists in this dream al-
though the very regimes
which would be the targets
of a Soviet takeover attempt
are the most adamant in
their refusal to let us take •
more than the most elemen-
tary defense precautions
there.
They deny us the use of
bases on their territory,
they deplore the very idea of
an American presence in
the area and they practice
the most brazen extortion in
the supply of the Persian
Gulf oil on which we still
remain so dependent.
The Reagan Administra-
tion is acting tough, very
tough, in its pronounce-
ments to and about the
Soviet Union; one can say it -
did everything but dare
Qadaffi to attack our ma-
neuvering fleet in the Gulf
of Sidra. It warned the
North Korean regime over a
missile that may or may not
have been fired at an
American reconnaissance
plane, but it has let the
Saudi Arabian regime walk
all over it and it meekly
complies with demands that
we "prove" our friendship
by providing it with a
mighty arsenal of death.

an embarrassing position.
