TEL AVIV (JTA) — Arab
affairs experts say the
Lebanese Christian agree-
ment to Syrian demands to
sever contracts with Israel
is further proof of the slow
but sure Syrian take-over in
Lebanon.
One specialist likened it
to a glacier, advancing inch
by inch at a rate not noticed
on a daily basis but discern-
able in a year or so. He noted
that the Syrians had first
moved into coastal areas of
Lebanon formerly con-
trolled by Christians five or
six years ago. Last year the
Syrian move into the hill
area gave rise to the Syrian
missile crisis.
Officials were reported
considering the implica-
tions of the latest Christian
move. Pointing out that it
did not affect Israeli rela-
tions with the area of south-
ern Lebanon controlled by
Maj. Saad Haddad, which
forms a buffer zone between
Israel and Palestine Libera-
tion Organization con-
trolled _regions. Officials
said Israel would continue
to help Christians in other
areas if they requested as-
sistance.

NY Law Permits
Cement Barriers
to Mark Graves

NEW YORK (JTA) — A
new New York state law
bans Jewish cemeteries
from promulgating rules
that prevent a JeW from or-
dering a cement bed to mark
off a grave.
Gov. Hugh Carey signed
the measure into law. last
month according to
Menahem Shayovich, spe-
cial assistant to the gover-
nor. The new law applies to
cemeteries primarily in the
southern part of the state,
most New York Jews

live.
Shayovich told the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency
that the measure had its
genesis in complaints by
Jews to their rabbis about
cemetery officials who said
their regulations did not
permit cement beds. He said
the problem was suffi-
ciently widespread to lead
to action in the state legisla-
ture.
