Friday, September 11, 1931 11 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Novel Chronicles Wealthy Jewish Family in Germany Four generations of a wealthy German-Jewish family are chronicled in Sil- via Tennenbaum's new novel, "Yesterday's Streets" (Random ifouse). The Wertheims have lived in Frankfurt since the 15th Century, far longer than most of their gentile neighbors. Successful in business and the profes- sions, they are, by the time the novel begins in 1903, also patrons 6f the arts who live in a style comparable to their neighbors in France, the Rothschilds. Against the backdrop of contemporary events — the coming of World War I, the Russian Revolution, the col- lapse of the Weimar Repub- lic and the rise of Hitler — the author involves the reader with the fortunes of 15 major characters. There is Edu, the youngest son, who takes over the business on the death of his father and thereafter ceaselessly, FIRESTONE Wn JErankvelr. Rem!..ntrno Jewell) & Watch ABLY' . There is Andreas, a musicologist, and his twin brother, Ernst, who emigrates to Palestine, Emma, their'older sister, seems to find it terrifying to be a Jew, while Lena, their younger sister, pos- sesses a charm that car- ries her into many differ- ent Jewish and Gentile circles. As the Nazis come to power, many of the char- acters escape. The author details the adventures of the-family in Switzerland, France, Holland, England and America, but it is Frankfurt as it once was that is at the heart of the book. Silvia Tennenbaum was born in Frankfurt and carne to this country in 1938. A graduate student in art his- tory at Columbia Univer- sity, "Yesterday's Streets" is her second novel. She is also the author of "Rachel, the Rabbi's Wife." DINNER AND ACADEMIC CONVOCATION honoring PHILIP SLOMOVITZ with the Degree of Dr. of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa PROF. MARTIN HART General Vice Chairman—Chairman, Education Committee New Zealand Kehilla Begun MELBOURNE (JTA) — A new organization authorized to represent the New Zealand Jewish com- munity has been estab- lished in Wellington at a national conference attended by Jewish leaders from all the centers of Jewish population. The new umbrella group is to be known as the New Zealand Jewish Council. New Zealand's Jewish community numbers 3,500 and is divided mostly be- tween the cities of Auckland and Wellington, with smaller communities in key provincial centers. In recent years the com- munity has faced serious problems as a result of in- termarriage, emigration to Australia, and a growing anti-Israel shift in govern- ment policies among some 'opinion making groups. Relative to its small numbers, New Zealand' Jewry has a high rate of aliya. At the same time, there has been a steady growth in recent years of newcomers from the Soviet Union.
