Nathan Gleiber

Nathan A. Gleiber, foun-
der of Major Building Co.,
residential builders, died
Aug. 30 at age 83.
Born in Russia, Mr.
Gleiber came to Detroit 58
years ago. He retired 23
years ago and after retire-
ment taught Hebrew at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek. He
was graduated from the
Midrasha College of Jewish
Studies, from which he re-
ceived a degree in Hebrew
literature.
He lectured on •Hebrew
literature and specialized in
the poetry of Hayim
Nachman Bialik. He was a
colonizer in pre-state Israel
in 1920.

Mr. Gleiber was a
member of Bnai Brith,
Cong. Shaarey Zedek,
Greater Detroit Builders
Association and was
active in Zionist organ-
izations.

He leaves his wife, Hinda;
two daughters, Mrs. Nor-
man (Judith) Sommers and
Mrs. Melvin (Malverne)
Reinhart of Ann Arbor; five
grandchildren and one
great-granddaughter.

Elias Picheny,
JWB Executive

BERKELEY, Calif. (JTA)
— Elias Picheny, who
served as a staff executive of
the National Jewish Wel-
fare Board for 25 years, dur-
ing which he also was a field
secretary of the JWB sec-
tion in Chicago, died at age
76.
His major post was that of
JWB director of research
and community services in
New York City. A graduate
of the Teachers Institute of
the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America, he
moved into social work as
executive director of the
Jacob Schiff Center in the
Bronx".
As a JWB field consultant
Mr. Picheny guided- de-
velopments in Jewish cen-
ter practices in Pittsburgh,
St. Louis, Baltimore and In-
dianapolis. He was an early
member of the Hebrew
Teachers Union.
He was a co-founder of So"-
cial Workers for a Sane Nu-
clear Policy and spoke for
peace and disarmament in
many Midwest com-
munities.

Harry Goldman

Harry Goldman, founder
and chairman of the board
of Grant Southern Iron and
Metal Co., died Aug. 29 at
age 87.
A native Detroiter, Mr.
Goldman was a life member
of Temple Beth El, a former
board member of the
Franklin Hills Country
Club, a member of the board
of the Jewish Home for the
Aged and was active in ef-
forts on behalf of the Allied
Jewish Campaign.
He leaves two sons, Mar-
vin and Irving E.; a daugh-
ter, Mrs. Harry (Shirley)
Witus; a brother, Abe of
Florida; eight grand-
children and six great-
grandchildren.

In Los Angeles, she re-
ceived a "Woman of the
Year" citation from the city
council. Mrs. Sheplow is a
former Detroiter.
