JERUSALEM' (JNI) —
Some 1,500-Crypt-Jews live
in Portugal, attend church,
and pray to "Little Saint
Moses" and "Saint Queen
Esther," according to Prof.
Amilcar Paulo, president of
the Institute for Cultural
Relations Between Por-
tugal and Israel.
The Crypt Jews are a
. closed community which,
despite history, in the five
centuries since the Inquisi-
tion, "keeps its Jewish tra-
dition alive in total sec-
recy," Paulo said. .
The small communities of
Crypt-Jews, he said, are
very poor culturally and
economically. Their mem-
bers support themselves as
transient merchants of
goods in the public markets.
