Hellman Novel Looks at Woman Facing Challenge "Double Standards" (Doubleday), a novel by Aviva Hellman, is the story of a woman who gave up her identity, personal ambi- tions and needs for the sake of her husband, home and children, only to find herself alone and out of step with the times. . Set in the social and polit- ical circles of New York, Southampton and Europe, Ms. Hellman details the life of Beth Van Ess, who defies the standards of her world in the 19505 and marries Adam Stillman, a liberal Jewish lawyer in whom she sees a magnetism the men she grew up with do not pos- sess. Then, at 50, and settled into a state of contentment, she is suddenly faced with Adam's decision to leave her for a woman half her age. Beth is left to ponder what went wrong and how she will survive. As Beth looks back over the last 30 years of her life, searching for clues, her discoveries are those of many women of her generation. "Double Standards" offers a mov- ing portrait of the rapidly-changing morals and manners of the last three decades and their effect on women who grew up in a more de- fined era. Aviva Hellman was born in the United States, lives in New York and spends much of her time in Tel Aviv.
