HOLLYWOOD — Sidney
Lumet's "Prince of the City"
is a merciless expose of cor-
ruption in New York, with
special emphasis on the
police forces, basically
Based on a factual ac-
count by Robert Daley, "Pr-
ince of the City" goes out
on the assumption that
everyone has his price.
Daniel Ciello, the cop por-
trayed by Treat Williams,
haunted by a feeling of
plainclothesmen, who roam
the streets at night to catch
narcotics dealers, prosti-
tutes and pimps. It deals
with - honest men who
gradually become
enmeshed in the whirlpool
of vice and filth.

PADDY CHAYEFSKY
will be remembered not
only as an important writer
for stage, screen and televi-
sion whose work centered
on the humane aspects of
life, but also as a courageous
fighter for justice. In 1978,
Chayefsky was the only one
among those appearing on
stage at the Academy
Award ceremonies to re-
pudiate Vanessa Red-,
grave's scurrilous remarks
about "Zionist hudlums."
"The Academy Award
Show is not a forum For the
propagation of personal
political propaganda" were
Chayefsky's words, drawing
stormy applause from the
audience.

guilt, feels compelled to
clear his conscience by
squealing to the district at-
torney with the result that
many of his comrades on the
force are indicted, some
commit suicide, all are los-
ing their jobs. The only one
who seems to withstand the
pressure is one Gus Levy
(Broadway actor Jerry Or-
bach).
Sidney Lumet has made
28 feature films to date. "Pr-
ince of the City," his current
offering, is his most painful
for the audience as it
must have been for him.
Transposed into the vis-
ual medium by the director
in collaboration with 'Jay
Presson Allen (who also
serves as executive pro-
ducer), the picture suffers
under a disjointed script
and an all-too-diffused ap-
proach. Told in densely in-
terwoven images, the ear-
lier part of the story re-'
mains incomprehensible,
particularly, since the
realistically recorded
dialogue is hard to under-
stand.
JEROEN KRABBE, the
Dutch resistance leader
who sacrifices his life in
"Soldier of Orange," con-
firmed his Jewish heritage,
adding that his parents
were the only survivors in
his family.
Born right after WWII,
the tall and extremely good-
looking young man studied
at the Amsterdam Academy
while beginning to appear
on stage. In "Soldier of
Orange" he is the aristocrat
who encourages Rutger
Hauer to go on fighting be-
fore he himself is -being
caught by the Nazis and
executed.
-
RAY STARK, who was
honored by the Academy
last year with the Irving G.
Thalberg Award, now is
heading the production of
"Annie, ' based on the play
by Thomas Meehan, with
music by Charles Strouse
and lyrics by Martin Char-
nin.
