THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Communal Leadership Role Held by Rebecca Goldstein Rebecca Goldstein, for four decades active in pharmaceutical circles as a leader in the Aesculapian Pharmaceutical Associa- tion Auxiliary and holding important offices in major women's movements, died Aug. 12 at age 72. A native Detroiter, Mrs. Goldstein earned a BS de- gree at Wayne State Uni- versity and this year re- ceived a 50-year commer- (' ' high school teacher's _ificate. She was a graduate and second generation member of Cong. Shaarey Zedek, where she taught Sunday school and was affiliated with the sisterhood. She was the president of the Aesculapian auxil- iary for three years. She was the prescription chairman for 10 years. She also was chairman of the co-operative Council and a member of the League of Jewish Women's Organizations and the League of Catholic and Jewish Women. Among the other organ- izations which benefited from her service were: Zionist Organization of America — Detroit District, Hadassah, Women's Ameri- can ORT, Sinai Hospital Guild, Jewish National Evelyn Baum Evelyn Baum, a member of Jewish and civic organ- izations, died Aug. 22 at age 76. Born in Port Gibson, Miss., Mrs. Baum was graduated from the Univer- sity of Missouri. She was a founder of The Orchards children's service, and was a member of Tem- ple Beth El and its sister- hood, a board member of the Brandeis University Na- tional Women's Committee Detroit Chapter and a former board member of the National Council of Jewish Women. She also held member- ship in the Founders Society of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Children's Museum, Friends of the De- troit Public Library, Chil- dren's Hospital, Sinai Hos- pital Guild and Women's American ORT. She leaves her husband, Louis; a son, Dr. Richard of Indianapolis, Ind.; a daugh- ter, Mrs. Robert (Jane) Wachsler of Westport, Conn.; a brother, Louis idenrich of Cleveland, five and io; grandchildren. Janet Epstein CHICAGO (JTA) — Janet Epstein, the great- granddaughter of one of Chicago's first rabbis, died last Friday. She was 86. Her great-grandfather was Rabbi Abraham Rabinowitz, who settled in Chicago in the late 1860s and established the first congregation on the South Side, Ohav Shalom, in 1891.
