Youth Services Appeal Event
to Hear Bnai Brith Official

Gerald Kraft, a senior
vice president of Bnai Brith
International, will be the
keynote speaker at the Bnai
Brith Foundation 1981-
1982 Youth Services Appeal
Kick-Off Dinner 7 p.m.
Sept. 10 at Adat Shalom
Synagogue. Cocktails will
be served at 6.
Kraft is a product of AZA
and Hillel. During his high
school years he started out
as president of his AZA
chapter and worked his way
up to beconiing president of
the Kentucky-Indiana-Ohio
Region of AZA, and then
member of the district
and international boards of
AZA.
While studying at In-
diana University, Kraft
served a two-year term as
president of the Indiana
University Hillel Student
Council. Kraft then held a
variety of posts in Bnai
Brith until attaining his
current position.

In 1960, Kraft was named
a delegate to the White
House Conference on Chil-
dren and Youth and also
served as a member of the
Indiana Governor's Youth
Council.
In addition to his ac-
tivities with Bnai Brith
International, Kraft
serves as a member of the
board of the Council of
Jewish Theological Sem-
inary of America and is
active in the leadership of
a number of communal
and civic organizations
in Indianapolis.
He currently is a vice
president of the In-
dianapolis Jewish Welfare
Federation, as a member of
the board of directors of the
Bureau of Jewish Educa-
tion, is a past president and
life member of the Jewish
Community Center Asso-
ciation and is a past
president and a member of
the board of Cong. Beth El
Zedeck.

States were anti-Semites
was not actually cause for
dancing in the streets. But
it was 45 percent in 1964
and this sharp decline rein-
forced the belief of many
Americans, Jews and non-
Jews, that prejudice is
slowly disappearing in this
country.
Coincidentally, I ran into
several people who confided
to me that they believed
anti-Semitism was becom-
ing more prevalent.
Now these people were
not talking about the ri
of hate groups such as tl
neo-Nazis or the Ku Klux
Klan, although this is
happening. Nor were
they talking about van-
against
dalism
synagogues or other
Jewish institutions, al-
though this, too, is in-
creasing.
Ironically, both the AJ-
Committee finding that
anti-Semitism is decreasing
and the perception by ordi-
nary people that it is in-
creasing are correct. Dis-
crimination against Jews,
either economically or so-
, cially, is largely disappear-
ing. Most Jews have not ex-
perienced any meaningful
anti-Semitism personally.

At the same time, many
American Jews are uneasy.
They do not know whether
to blame it on the economic
situation, whether Arab oil
bears some responsibility or
whether their support of Is-
rael and the worldwide at-
tack on Israel has some
bearing. All these things
are tied up in a way which is
not yet understood.
Discrimination against
