Performers, Committees Named
for Annual Balfour Celebration

Michaels and Russian-
Jewish concert pianist
Sergei Edelmann.
Irving Laker, ZOD
president, has announced
that Dr. Lester Zeff and
Max Sosin will again serve
as co-chairmen of the Bal-
four Celebration Commit-
tee. Mrs. Sidney Z. Leib will
head the Women's Commit-
tee and Mrs. I. Walter Silver
and Mrs. Bernard Weston
will chair the Golden Spon-
sor's Committee.
A new committee
which will seek schol-
arship grants for under-
privileged Israeli chil-
dren to study at ZOA's
educational center in
Kfar Silver, Israel, will be
headed by Laker and
Sidney Silverman.
Laker pointed out that
apart from the entertain-
ment aspect of the Balfour
Celebration, it represents
ZOD's major, once-a-year

The Detroit District,
Zionist Organization of
America, will have its an-
nual Balfour Celebration in
observance of the 64th an-
niversary of the Balfour
Declaration 7:30 p.m. Oct.
25 at Ford Auditorium.

Zionist Organization of
America in this country and
in Israel.
A major beneficiary is the
550-acre Kfar Silver. Serv-
ing over 600 Israeli chil-
dren, Kfar Silver's facilities
include schools in agricul-
ture, automotive technol-
ogy, nursing, aeronautics
and a fully-accredited high
school for American stu-
dents.
Singer-comedienne Mari-
lyn Michaels has been a fre-
quent guest on the Mike
Douglas Show, the Today
Show and the John David-
son Show. She can do more
than 30 impersonations and
speaks fluent Yiddish. She
was the sole female per-
former in the ABC-TV
series "Kopykats" and star-
red in 1966 as Fanny Brice
in the national company
performing "Funny Girl."
Pianist Sergei Edel-
mann, 19, made his public
debut at age 10 with the
Lvov (Ukraine) Sym-
phony and performed as
soloist in more than 50
concerts in the Soviet
Union. After emigrating
to the U.S., Edelmann
won the Young Concert
Artists International
Auditions in 1979, per-
forming in New York and
Washington in 1980.
He also was named reci-
pient of the first Baldwin
Young Pianist Prize of
Young Concert Artists.
