At least 14 anti-Nazi pro-
testors were arrested by De-
troit police in two separate
incidents last week in con-
nection with Saturday's
Nazi rally in Kennedy
Square.
On Thursday, six mem-
bers of the International
Committee Against Racism
and the Progressive Labor
Party were arrested after
staging a sit-in in Detroit
Mayor Coleman Young's
office to protest the grant-
ing of a rally permit to the
Nazis. Young was not in his
office at the time.
At Saturday's rally,
demonstrators hurled
rocks, fruit and sticks at
the Nazis, forcing them to
drive away in their re-
nted truck. Many of the
demonstrators, de-
scribed by bystanders as
belonging to left-wing
political groups, then
began taunting Detroit
police.
Several scuffles broke
out, which turned into a
general melee for approx-
imately 10 minutes. No
major injuries were re-
ported.
The Nazis were from the
SS Action Group in West-
land, the same group that
demonstrated at the Israel
Independence Day fes-
tivities in Southfield in
May. They reportedly in-
cluded several Nazis from
Chicago.
The Detroit City Council
rejected criticism that it
could have turned down the
Nazis' request because it
was fraudulently signed.
The request was submitted
by Mark "Heydrich" and
