• THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 40 Friday, August 28, 1981 Shrinking Czech Jewry Remains Optimistic PRAGUE — Despite heavy odds against it, Czechoslovakia's Jewish community, small and shrinking, aging and lead- erless for the past 10 years, is determined it will not disappear, Reuters' corre- spondent Colin McIntyre cabled from Prague. McIntyre's cable, pro- vided by the International Council of Jews from Czechoslovakia stated: •••••••••••••••••••••••• SURF EI & TURF •• SEA SHELL ..s5 OFF ANY DINNER *pm 1.11..11.1.= 1.1.0•••••• ■ •••••• ••Ama NTI. Hudson Drive SoUthfield, Michigan "Once a thriving and in- tellectually rich community of more than 350,000, one of the oldest in Europe, it is now reduced to 6,000 active members at an average age of 65 to 70, according to Jewish leaders here. "The total number of Jews in the country is esti- mated at between 12,000 to 14,000, they said. Of the 50,000 who survived the Nazi death camps, many left the country during the anti-Semitic campaigns of the 1950s, whilst others emigrated in 1968 after ac- cusations that Jews had played a prominent role in the short-lived movement that was crushed by Soviet tanks. "A handful of young people are active, but the knowledge that top jobs and university places are rarely given to those actively involved in reli- gion is a major deter- rent." "Western predictions that the community will disap- pear within 20 years are disputed by Dr. Desider Galsky, who took over as head of the Bohemian and Moravian community last November. "In 20 years, there may be fewer members than now, but the community will still be there,' Dr. Galsky, a former writer and journalist, said, adding that many Jews wait until re- tirement before declaring themselves members of the community to take an active part. "According to Jewish sources, there are also a few `protest conversions' to Judaism. " lay main task is to show the world that we are still here,' Dr. Galsky said. 'We want visitors to know that there is a Jewish commu- nity with a long and rich tradition still functioning after 1,000 years.' Dems Plan Mideast Tour WASHIVGTON — The Democratic National Com- mittee is planning a tour of Egypt and Israel in De- cember, according to Newsweek magazine. The committee hopes to raise at least $1 million from the tour. uters correspondent, Jewish leaders are hop- ing for something of a re- vival when the country's new rabbi, Daniel Meyer, completes his training at the Budapest rabbinical college in 1984. "One of the strongest arguments for the survival of the Jewish community, particularly in Prague, is that Czechoslovakia's Communist government is interested in it — if for no other reason because it is good for tourism. The authorities provide funds for the upkeep of the ancient sites and relics, and give other assistance enabling the community to exist. "Relations between the Jewish community and the Ministry of Religion which looks after religious mat- ters, are very correct," Dr. Galsky told Reuters. "Basi- cally, these relations de- pend on the state of U.S.- Soviet relations. When these are good, it is good for all people, including our- selves."
