Although the persons challenging the school board are not Jewish, the principle involved is of "cru- cial concern" to the Jewish community, for its members observe "almost identical holidays" with the members of the World-Wide Church of God who brought the suit," according to the AJ- Congress brief. If the school policy is upheld, the brief added, the result would be to "undermine the religious liberty of Amarillo's Jews." The Federal District Court in Amarillo, where the World-Wide Church of God took the case, temporarily enjoined enforcement of the religious-holiday policy. The school board then appealed to the Fifth Cir- cuit. "The (School Board's) pol- icy," according to the brief, "singles out religious ab- sences for adverse treat- ment to the detriment of members of the World-Wide Church and others, such as Jews, whose liturgical calendars require more than two days a year of weekday abstinence from worldly affairs. Such a regu- lation is not neutral; on the contrary, it manifests im- permissible hostility towards religion." Firms Seeking Change in Israeli Economic Policy TEL AVIV (JTA) — Is- raeli manufacturers have threatened to halt produc- tion if the government does not change its economic policies but continues to cut credits. Manufacturers Associa- tion president Avraham Shavit said Monday the re- cent slow-down in devalua- tion of the Israel Shekel, in- troduced as a measure to wind down inflation, made exports unprofitable and only encouraged local con- sumption of imported goods. The Association sais it was considering halting produc- tion and exports for some days as a protest. Syrian Meeting for Rejectionists NEW YORK — Libya and Syria held meetings in Damascus this week to dis- cuss ways of strengthening their cooperation against renewed Israel-Egyptian negotiations and "U.S. im- perialism." Col. Muammar Qaddafi of Libya and Syrian President Hafez Assad met for 21/2 hours Tuesday. Last year, Libya and Syria announced plans to merge, but there has been little progress in that direc- tion. Last week, Libya an- nounced a friendship treaty with South Yemen and Ethiopia, prompting Somalia to close its dip- lomatic mission in Libya.
