which they are now helped
to acquire reading and other
learning abilities," Mrs.
Burstyn said. "We plead
that our parental duties will
be shared by, the commu-
nity:'
The full time teachers at
the local PTACH have mas-
ter's degrees and have been
approved by the state as
fully qualified for the tasks
assigned to them.
Mrs. Burstyn said there
are many children in
need of PTACH help and
there is now a special
need to establish a girls'
class.
"We are functioning
under a deficit, our teachers
must be paid, we plead for
the support that will hope-
fully come from the com-
munity," Messrs. Hirsch
and Josephs and Mrs.
Burstyn i said in their cur-
rent appeal for help.
Responses to the appeal
for financial help may be
made to the office of local
PTACH at 23440 Church,
Oak Park, 48237.
Mrs. Burstyn may be con-
tacted for more information
and by contributors at
18250 Alta Vista, South-
field, 48075, 559-2295.
PTACH circulates a
newsletter enumerating
its achievements to its
branches. A fact sheet
printed by the organiza-
tion lists the following
gains made since its in-
ception:
Creation of a national
organization to help parents
of learning disabled chil-
dren; development of pro-
grams in yeshivot aiding

learning disabled; creation
of a high school academic
and vocational program for
mildly learning disabled
boys in conjunction with
Yeshiva University; estab-
lishment of the Bayla
Schnaidman Memorial
Fund to promote the de-
velopment and publication
of special curriculum mate-
rials for children with
learning handicaps.
Also sponsorship of a re-
medial tutorial program for
children with special learn-
ing needs in cooperation
with Brooklyn College; rap
sessions for parents of
learning disabled children;
cooperation with Jewish
Parents United in a feder-
ally funded program to
train yeshiva teachers in
recognizing and working
with children with special
learning needs; annual pro-
fessional conferences and
workshops on Jewish spe-
cial education for parents
and educators; liaison with
government agencies and
other Jewish organizations.
The program is geared
only toward learning dis r
abled children. This does
not include the mentally re-
tarded, emotionally im-
paired or physically dis-
abled but according to the
Detroit chapter's definition,
only children who suffer
from a malfunction of the
signal transmission appa-
ratus between the receptor
(eye, ear, nose, hands) and
the brain. The child does not
learn at the same pace as
non-learning disabled, de-
spite the fact that he may
have a high IQ score.

Beth El School Teaching
Handicapped Jewish Kids

A program of religious
education for handicapped
children will be offered for
the sixth consecutive year
at Temple Beth El. The
classes are being held under
the auspices of temple's
Prentis Religious School.
Slated at 9:30 a.m. Satur-
days, the classes are open to
all Jewish children in met-
ropolitan Detroit and sur-
rounding communities.
Temple membership is not
required. There is a nomi-
nal charge for each child
enrolled.
There are two classrooms
divided on the basis of age
for all handicaps except
emotionally impaired chil-
dren. There is an additional
classroom for these chil-
dren, supervised by a spe-
cialist in the field. All of the
teachers involved in the
program have master's de-
grees in the following
categories: Learning dis-
abilities, mentally im-
paired, emotionally im-
paired and music. All of the
teachers are qualified and
have had experience in
handling most types of dis-
abilities.
Unlike . the PTACH
program which sepa-
rates girls and boys, the
Beth El program is

coeducational.
The program • includes
Bible and holiday stories,
illustrated with creative
dramatics, introduction to
Hebrew, Jewish music and
dance, Shabat services and
cooking activities.
A special feature is the
Correlated chaverim
(friends) program. This in-
volves selected seventh and
eighth grade students from
the regular religious school
who will act as helpers for
their special friends.
Interested parents should
call Alan E. Waldman, tem-
ple educational director,
851-1100.

The Council of the League
of Nations in 1922 con-
firmed the Mandate for
Palestine, incorporating the
terms of the Balfour Dec-
laration, recognizing "the
historical connection of the
Jewish people with Pales-
tine and ... the grounds for
reconstituting their na-
tional home in that coun-
try," and calling upon the
Mandatory Government to
place the country "under
such political, administra-
tive and economic condi-
tions as will ensure the es-
tablishinent of the Jewish
national home."
