Israeli Track Star Remembers Tragic Events at Munich Olympics

JERUSALEM — At 18,
Esther Roth was one of the
top-rated sprinters in world
competition. She had
broken every Israeli record
for the 100- and 200-meter
races, she had built up a
substantial string of inter-
national racing victories
and she was considered a

top contender at the 1972
Munich Olympics.
"It was everything I had
lived for," said Roth, who
was profiled by David Joroff
in Israel Scene. She had
made it through the gruel-
ing qualifying rounds and
scheduled to run in lane
three in the finals.

Countless opportunities present themselves when a kind re-
membrance will do much to create or maintain goodwill that is
so essential to business.

An occasion for congratulations, a moment for well-wishes, a
time for sympathy ... these are a few of the situations requiring
thoughtfulness on your part.

The next time you wish to convey a timely expression for a
favorable impression ... remember, a gift basket will . . . say it
better!

But when the finals were
run, lane three was empty,
Ms. Roth — along with the
survivors of the decimated
Israeli team — was in an
airplane on her way home to
Israel. So, too, were the
bodies of 11 Israeli athletes,
cut down in a murderous
PLO terrorist attack inside
the Olympic village.
The Israeli women's
team escaped because its
quarters were in a sepa-
rate building, 200 meters
away from their male
teammates.
"It might have been
easier," says Roth, "if we
had been attacked, too. As it
was, we did not know any
more about what was hap-
pening than anyone else.
There was no accurate
news. The loudspeakers
kept making routine an-
nouncements about sports
events. They kept playing
music.
"I was angry and
frightened. Everybody just
continued on his way as if
everything was normal, as
if this was only some small
thing. It was like a show.
People came as close as they
could to look at the specta-
cle. They even brought their
cameras so they could go
home with souvenirs.

"For us on the team it was
a catastrophe, but the offi-
cials seemed to be more con-
cerned about trying to per-
suade us to continue in our
events than they were about
anything else."
Esther Roth is now 27-
years old. "But I still re-
member those terrible
days. I lost my coach. He
had worked with me for
seven years and had been
like a father to me. I can
never forget him or the
others. We had all been so
close. We worked and
trained together. We
shared a dream together.
"Then suddenly, in the
middle of the dream, for no
reason, it happened. And for
me, the dream was over."
Nevertheless, Esther re-
turned to run in the next
Olympics: "I didn't go then
to win the medals. The
medals meant nothing to
me. I only went because we
had to make the world re-
member our team and our
coach.
"It wasn't easy for me to
continue, but we had to
show them that they could
not stop us. We had to show
them that while we may be
afraid, we could not be
frightened away. We had to
show them that we had sur-
vived. We had to show them
that we could keep coming
back."
Now married and the
mother of a seven-year-old
son, Ms. Roth is too old to be
a top sprinter. But she is at
an ideal age for running
hurdles, at which she is
rated highly. Esther Roth,
however, no longer runs in
competition.
"Munich took some-
• thing out of me," she says.
"I don't want to compete
any longer. Now I run
just for fun. Just for my-
self."
At 1.64 meters and 54
kilograms (5'4", 119
pounds), she maintains the

same excellent physical

condition that she had at 18.
A sabra, born of Muscovite
parents who immigrated in
1940, Ms. Roth has dark
skin, black hair and brown
eyes. And, when she is not
talking of the Munich

Olympics, she smiles a
great deal.
A teacher of athletics, she
also coaches the 12 and 13-
year-old hopeful track stars
at the school where she
teaches. She runs nearly
every day on the beach.
