The two countries will join the United States and Fiji in' the 2,500-member force that will patrol the area following Israel's re- turn of the final segment to Egypt next April. Colombia will send an in- fantry battalion (800-900 men) and- Fiji is set to con- tribute 500 men to the force. Estanilao Valdez, Uruguay's foreign minister did not indicate how many soldiers his country would send. Efforts to persuade Argentina to send a contin- gent have not been suc- cessful. Fiji has had 600 soldiers in Lebanon since 1978 as part of the United Nations peacekeeping force. The Fi- jians, who gained renown as jungle fighters against the Japanese in World War II, use a style of warfare which is unique in the Middle East. Instead of firing their rifle, Fijian soldiers would rather swing them like clubs. Also, they prefer to hurl hand grenades at the enemy without removing the firing pin, thus making it a steel equivalent to the traditional throwing club with which earlier Fijian warriors stunned an oppo- nent before closing in for the kill. Liturgical Songs' Interpreted by Composer and a Disciple "Reb Laser and Yehoshualle" is the title of a record produced by Lifetime Recordings, New York. The title credits a composer and a youthful singer. The songs in this recording are tradi- tional. Reb Laser is Lester W. Osband, the composer of the songs. He continued a lifelong love for Jewish tra- ditional music and the re- sult is the expressive set of compositions sung by Yehoshualle. It is the combination of both that makes this record- ing so unusual. The young disciple has a very sweet voice. It is expressed in the interpretations in this al- bum. The combined voices lend pathos and joy to the efforts of lovers of the music that is afforded sanctity by the request annotated on the record that "since the text of this record comes from sac- red sources, it would be appreciated if owners of this record would refrain from playing it on the Sabbath or Torah- commanded holidays." This gives an indication of the approach to sanctity by the two singers and by the elder who is the com- poser. Here are the songs heard on both sides of the record: "Yimloch Hashem L'olawm," "La'yehuim Hoy'y'saw Oraw V'sim- thaw," "Ahl Tiraw Mipachad Pisom," "Shomer Yisrawel," "Bruchaw Aht Lashem Biti (Book of Ruth," "Ahtress Z'kaynim B'nay Vawnim (Proverbs)," "Reb Lazer's Dance," "Y'chad- shayhu," "Vahaviaynu L'shawlom Mayarbah Kan- fos Hawawrets," "Hillel Omayr (Ethics of the Fathers)," "Achaynu Kawl Bays Yisrawel," "Hamalawch Hagoayl Ossi Mikawl Raw," "Ahavas Olawm" and "Shtik (A follow-the-leader dance)." Shtik is defined on the jacket of this record as "a dance used to amuse bride and groom, a Bar Mitzva, or any other celebrant." In some respects these re- cordings approach the Hasidic. The concluding hymnals on both sides, "Reb Lazer's Dance" and "Shtik," attest to it and provide ex- citing interest in the corn- positions. Israel's Kibutz Sector Prospers JERUSALEM (JNI) — Kibutzniks total 3.5 percent of the overall Jewish popu- lation of Israel, and 21 per- cent of the farming popula- tion, according to a recently released pamphlet from the Israel Information Center. Yet despite its relatively small size, the kibutz sector supplies 40 percent of Is- rael's agricultural output as well as five percent of all industrial products. Orlinsky to Present Paper at Masoretic Studies Parley JERUSALEM — Harry Orlinsky of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish In- stitute of Religion will pre- sent a paper at the fourth congress of the Interna- tional Organization for Masoretic Studies this weekend in Jerusalem. Orlinsky, who serves as president of the organiza- tion, will be joined by one of his former students, Rabbi Milton Weinberg of New York, for the presentation of "Notes on the Masora Book of Amos." Some 12 papers are scheduled to be presented at the conference. There will Friday, August 14, 1981 We uniformly think too well of ourselves.
