Built in 1969, Sussex House has always been one of the most beautiful, free- standing restaurants in the Midwest . . . with its dark wood look . . . heavy wood ceiling beams . . . huge dark brown booths and round and square tables . . . blended red tones ... semi-stucco walls . . . in English Tudor design ... . with chandeliers imported from around the world. No mistake that Sussex House has always been a showplace, but people wanted more than atmos- phere . . . and it seems that finally they have received it. The new menu has 10 seafood and fish items .. . the kitchen staff is new ... a new salad bar ac- companies all lunches and dinners ...new wait- resses ... and a new life for those that were re- tained. But probably the most significant change other than Sam Jarrus being there is the change in chefs . . . Don Kanners is there now . . . bringing with him a world of experience from the Drieux Tract restaurant in 'New Orleans. Also on the new menu are items like . . . Veal Aiguil- letes, medallions of veal with a heavy white wine cream sauce and mush- rooms . . . Beef Wellingotn, Veal Oscar, Veal Piccante, etc.: . Chocolate Mousse is now being served every day. Who is Agnes Sorrel, I asked before ordering the soup with her name? .. . Being told it was just a name given chicken and mushroom soup by a French chef that Don had worked with, we tried it . . . Who- ever she is, Agnes Sorrel can be proud of her namesake as prepared by Don. Then Sliced Beef Oscar ... sauteed tenderloin medallions over as- paragus, topped with crab meat and bearnaise sauce ... There are daily lunch and dinner spe- cials ... This was one of the dinner specials. Soup and salad comes with all specials . . . as does choice-of-day vegetable or potato . . . Ours was Italian zucchini or brabant potatoes. We had a most efficient and pleasant waitress .. . Sheryl McDonnell . . . gra- cious and most competent. Other Sussex House waitresses, like Michelle Evanoff, are doing their utmost to please customers . . This has always been S. am Jarrus' way and he isn't about to change. Michelle, by the way, has one of the prettiest smiles around. Thursdays and Saturdays in the lounge is Alexander's Jazz Band . . . playing a lot of the old tunes that make people click their fingers in rhythmic tempo. Downstairs at Sussex House are also some of the finest private banquet areas around. There has never been much doubt about the Sus- sex House beauty . . . And finally it is complemented with an all new look of-din- ing style . . . so very much for the better. DRUMMER CHICO HAMILTON comes to Chuck Muer's P'Jazz this Monday with Detroit's own Austin-Moro Band making its second appearance of the season Wednesday on the poolside terrace at Hotel Pontchartrain.
