THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Danny Raskin's

LISTENING
POST

CAST OF "BARNUM,"
now appearing at the Fisher
Theater, gave the residents
of Borman Hall, Jewish
Home for Aged a real treat
recently . . . and perform-
ing juggling acrobatics,
magic, pantomime and cir-
cus entertainment . . . pre-
ceded by a New York/
Detroit style deli luncheon
at the home.
The entertainers were ac-
:ompanied by Rochelle Barr
at the piano as Borman Hall
was decorated with circus
posters, crepe paper and
balloons for the thrilling
wonders put on by guys 'n
gals from "Barnum" . . .
About 160 . .. of all ages
. . . both ambulatory and
non-ambulatory . . . had
themselves one heck of a
good time.
Jon Essex, Fisher Thea-
ter manager, and Carol
Rosenberg, program direc-
tor of Jewish Home For
Aged, have worked together
to bring "Annie" and "Bar-
num" casts to the home.
It's an almost certainty
that David Cassidy and the
cast of "Little Johnny
Jones" (takeoff on "Yankee
Doodle Dandy), coming next
to the Fisher Theater, will
put on their George M.
Cohan specialties for the
very much appreciative
Borman Hall residents.
TYPO ERRATA . . .
correct spelling is Stan
Satovsky . . . owner of the
new Executive Athletic
Club (former Southfield
AC) in the Travelers Tower
on Evergreen.
GET WELL WISHES
. . . to ad man Mike Glick
. . . at Beaumont Hospital.
REMEMBER THOSE
great Infants Service Group
dinner-dances? . . . The
last one was eight years ago
. . . and the gals then went
to yearly luncheons . . .
They're back again . . . and
plans are already under
way for the ISG Dinner-
Dance, Oct. 11, at the Fur-
niture Club.
Co-chairlassies are Eve-
lyn Roth, Rose Kruman and
Eleanor Riseman . . . three
of the dedicated "old guard"
. . . President of Infants
Service Group is Rose
Homer.
SINGLES
NEW
GROUP called "Second
Generation Singles" for
folks 21-42 is being formed
. . . Debut dance is Aug. 23,
8:30 p.m. at Steak and Ale,
12 Mile and Orchard Lake
Rd.
LILLIAN WHITNEY,
resident manager at Char-
ter House Apartments, is a
lucky gal . . . and a lot of
folks who like Lil are glad
. . . She is okay now after
falling on her face and
breaking her nose . . .
Could have been worse . . .
much, much worse.
MEMORIES STILL
linger about 1927 Pingreee
(Dover Court) near 12th St.
. . . as Milton Stein visits
- t i..`

sister Ruth and brother-in-
law George Morris . . . But
he's more excited about
going from a size 46 down to
a 42 suit caused by playing
tennis in Florida where he
and wife Shirley now live.
AFTER 50 YEARS in
the pawn business, Maurice
Bindes has finally retired
. . . He and wife Freda have
moved to Century Village in
Boca Lincoln Bldg., Boca
Raton, Fla. . . . Maurice
follows Percy Swartz, who
retired and moved with wife
Lil to Arizona . . . Both
were at Detroit's oldest
pawnbroker, Al's Loan
Office, since Hastings
Street in 1912 . . . now sol-
ely owned by Bert Swartz
and his son Douglas.
20-YEAR-REUNION of
Mumford High 1961 classes
January, June and August)
is set for Nov. 28 at Michi-
gan Inn on J. L. Hudson
Drive . . . Many of the
questionnaires mailed to
former grads were lost in
the mail . . . Those who
didn't get any or know of
someone who needs one, the
persons to call are Babs Ro-
senthal Leib, 682-6272, or
Judy Schultz Ancell, 968-
4923 . . . Out-of-towners
are reminded it'll be
Thanksgiving holiday
weekend.
GAL BRINGING ALL
those latest European looks
to complement today's fash-
ions is color-and-style cut
expert Judaysia Garza . . .
now at Sal Bitonti's beauty
salon on Woodward in Bir-
mingham.
LOTS OF GOOD read-
ing can be gotten at
Glennwood ORT Chapter's
book sale, Aug. 20-23 at
Pontiac Mall . . . The girls
still need books (hard cover,
pocket, etc.) . . . For pic-
kup, call President Phyllis
Dubrinsky, 478-9393, or
Rose Stone, 569-5739.
GERTRUDE
PRINTZ'S one-person oil
paintings exhibit will be
Sept. 8, 10 to 5 at Far-
mington Hills Branch Li-
brary on W. 12 Mile . . .
Also Monday through
Thursday 10 to 9 and Friday
10 to 5.
FRIEND TELLS OF
Gus Newman writing, "I
will be 90-years old Aug. 10
and from good authority I
have been advised that
there is no vacancy above:"
That's good news from
Gus' multitude of friends
. . . and as William Haber
puts it, "Bis einhundert and
zwanzig. In view of the in-
flation — plus 12."

In an unlettered world,
when even kings could not
sign their names, they had
already developed
a system of universal
education, so that an illiter-
ate Jew was, even in the
dark ages, a contradiction
in terms.
— Cecil Roth
