Ex-Sephardic Chief Rabbi
Yitzhak Nissim Dies at 85

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israel's former Sephardic
Chief Rabbi, Yitzhak Nis-
sim, died Aug. 9 at age 85.
He had served as chief rabbi
for 18 years until 1974.
Born in Baghdad, Rabbi
Nissim studied at the
Jewish Religious Academy
there and became known for
his scholarship at an early
age. In 1925, he emigrated
to Jerusalem. In 1926, he
published his first major
commentary, "Zedaku
U-Mishpat." His home soon
became a meeting place for
scholars and community
leaders.
Rabbi Nissim was elected
chief rabbi in 1925 and soon
became a key figure in the
Chief Rabbinate Council.
As Sephardic chief rabbi, he
also served as president of
Israel's rabbinical high
court. Noted for his inde-
pendence of thought, Rabbi
Nissim sought to create a
harmonious relationship
between all sections of Is-
rael's society, including its
secular element. He
traveled frequently to
kibutzim to discuss religion
with kibutz members.
He upset Israeli leaders
when, in 1964, he refused
to participate in a recep-
tion for Pope Paul VI
during a papal visit to Is-
rael. He said he felt the
Pope did not show pro-
per respect for the chief
rabbinate in Israel.
A hard-liner on Jewish
religious law, he often was

Jewish Names
Ai'e Based on
Agriculture

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1981, JTA, Inc.)

A number of names in
Jewish traditional practice
are based on agricultural
objects.
We have several exam-
ples of this in the Bible, such
as the woman called
"Tamar" (a date palm —
Genesis 38:6) and the bibli-
cal Esther whose original
name was "Hadassah"
(Myrtle).
Some claim that women
were given such names of
trees since they bore the
fruit of our people when
they gave birth to children.
Others claim that it was
the beauty and fragrance of
these plants whirh reflected
the beauty and tenderness
of women.
It suggested that the bi-
blical reference to man as
being a "tree of the field"
(Deuteronomy 20:19) may
have given rise to calling
people by names of plants.
In modern Israel, family
names are often such names
like "Allon" (oak) and
Eshkol (grape cluster).
