down from Mount Sinai.
The Israelites often carried
the ark, into battle, which
may haye given rise to the
legend of its power. In a
rather loose way, the legend
is the basis for the'currently
popular movie, "Raiders of
the Lost Ark."

NEW YORK — What,is
reportedly the oldest sacred
ark yet found was un-
covered earlier this month ,
by American archeologists
in the upper, Galilee region
of Israel, according to the
New York Times. Scientists
believe the ark dates back to
the Third Century.
The large fragment of the
ark was discovered in the
ruins of a synagogue at the
site of Nabratien, about a
mile north of Safed. Coins
and ceramics found in the
ruins enabled archeologists
to establish the ark's an-
tiquity at 250 to 306 CE, the
date of a destructive earth-
quake in the region.

The discovery was an-
nounced jointly by Duke
University and the Ameri-
can School of Oriental Re-
search at Cambridge, Mass.
The joint effort is being
headed by Dr. Eric Meyers,
a professor of religion at
Duke.
According to the Bible,
the original Ark of the
Covenant contained the
stone tablets of the Ten
Commandments brought
