Ancient Jewish Burial Site
Discovered in Italian Town

NEW YORK — A
catacomb apparently used
as a burial ground by Ita-
lian Jews during the final
centuries of the Roman Em-
pire has been discovered by
a team of American and Ita-
lian archeologists excavat-
ing near the southern Ita-
lian town of Venosa, accord-
ing to the New York Times.
The scientists, led by
Prof. Eric M. Meyers of
Duke University and the
Rev. Cesare Colafemmina

of the University of Bari,
were digging a trench in a
necropolis used by Chris-
tians and Jews in Roman
times when they broke
through to the underground
passages of the catacomb
cut in the soft rock.
Eventually, the ar-
cheologists were able to
crawl through eight gal-
leries containing more than
1,000 grave niches. The bu-
rial area stretches for
nearly 300 yards.
Prof. Meyers called the
find "exceedingly impor-
tant" and said explora-
tion should shed TuFther
light on the life of the
town's Jews. Much of the
early history of the
2,000-year-old Jewish
community in Rome be-
came known following
the exploration of
catacombs found be-
tween 1859 t. Id 1919.
Doris Brickner of the
Heritage Committee of the
World Jewish Congress,
which financed the excava-
tion this year and is raising
money for a longer session
next summer, said further
researc would also tell
much auout the relations
between the thriving
Jewish and Christian com-
munities of Venosa. It is be-
lieved that the two factions
lived harmoniously until
the population was dis-
persed by the Saracen inva-
sions of the Ninth Century.

the last month, bringing the

gurated last week in a 250-

towns.
Some 1,000 animals
transferred from the old
overcrowded and small zoo

Safari Park have readjusted

ings, officials say.
