Britain Hits
Canal Project
LONDON (JTA) — Brit-
ain launched a surprise at-
tack on Israel's plan to con-
struct a hydro-electric sta-
tion on the shores of the
Dead Sea with sea water
channelled from the
Mediterranean.
Douglas Hurd, Minister
of State at the Foreign
Office, said last week that
the project as planned is
contrary to international
law as it involved unlawful
works in occupied territory
and infringes Jordan's legal
rights in the Dead Sea and
neighboring regions." He
added that no official sup-
port would be given by the
British government in re-
spect of the project. Israel
has never asked for any
support.
Hurd's remarks, in reply
to Conservative Member of
Parliament Richard
Needham, took Israeli cir-
cles by surprise. The
Foreign Office had prev-
iously expressed no official
interest in the canal project
and there have been dis-
cussions about it with the
Israel Embassy.
The mind revolts against
all censorian power which
displays pride or pleasure in
finding fault; but advice, di-
vested of the harshness, and
yet retaining the honest
warmth of truth, is like
honey put round the brim of
a vessel full of wormwood.
Even this, however, is
sometimes insufficient to
conceal the bitterness of the
draught.
— Percival
and the northern pumping
station of the National
Water Carrier, which were
also constructed with Bond
funds.
A highlight of the confer-
ence will be a dinner with
Prime Minister Menahem
Begin and a reception for
delegates by President of Is-
rael Yitzhak Navon.
