He was a man "of goodwill towards our coun- try and our people," said the Premier. And Israel for its part had "always admired France — ever since the days of the French Revolu- tion." Begin said he had told U.S. leaders in the past and was now reiterating it that if Wash- ington proposed a formal defense agreement with Israel he (Begin) would recommend to the Cabinet to accept it. "But it must be the great power which takes the in- itiative," Begin added. He noted that often un- written alliances are as ef- fective — and often more ef- fective — than formal pacts, citing the British-French "entente cordiale" of the be- ginning of the century' as one salient example. • On the suspended F-16 warplanes shipments the premier expressed the hope that they would be released "very soon," and on the F-15 and AWACS deal between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia he held out the prospect of a tough public campaign by Israel against it. • Soviet Union — Begin called for "normalization of relations" in spite of deep per person Includes round trip scheduled air 2 Nights at either: The New York Sheraton — The Sheraton City Squire Samson Travel Corporation 26711 Northwestern Hwy.
