Over the last 80 years, the Geniza collec- tion has ushered in a new era of Jewish learning. According to Reif, "There is hardly an area of Hebrew and Jewish studies that has not been revolutionized by find- ings that originated in the Geniza. Taken together, its fragments make up a literature of the sacred, the heretical and the mundane which reaches back to biblical times and extends forward to the 19th Century." Among the many lost He- brew books recovered from the hoard is the original version of "The Wisdom of Ben Sira," a work dating from the Second Century BCE. Jewish doubt about its sacredness had led to its ex- clusion from the Hebrew Bible and eventually the loss of its Hebrew text but May your life be filled with happiness • • • We at CUSTOM DRAPERY CLEANERS give your • • draperies the same royal treatment and you too will be • filled with happiness. • • • • • • • the Geniza ensured that it was not lost forever by preserving a 10th Century copy. No less exciting are the samples of the original handwriting of outstanding figures like Moses Maimonides and Yehuda Halevi and the many de- tailed accounts of social, economic and religious life among Near East Jews in the 11th and 13th Cen- turies. While these discoveries are a tribute to the genera- tions of scholars who have studied the Geniza, the pre- sent pace of work on its.re- storation goes back only eight years to when Reif, then only 30, was put in charge of it. Of the 140,000 fragments, 100,000 had still not been treated to ensure their preservation. Of these 68,000 had not even been opened when he arrived. r‘ 4 , t_‘• ---- 891-1818 •• • • • • • • • • • e • • ••• • "In June 1979, Shiekh Hashem Huzendur was assassinated by the PLO in Gaza after he indicated • • • • • • • • • Faced with the huge task, Reif was on the verge of resigning, but he persevered. A gifted lec- turer, he turned to the Jewish community in Britain for funds to help him build a team of con- servationists and schol- ars. These donations, to- gether with money from other countries, supple- ment the budget pro- vided by the university. Costs in 1981 are ex- pected to reach 70,000 Pounds ($135,000). Today, though the shadow of the economic re- cession hangs over the Geniza collection, its physi- cal preservation is now ensured against the ravages of the damp English cli- mate, but the task of open- ing its secrets to students of Jewish history is far from finished. Calif. Vandalism Law Signed LOS ANGELES (JTA) — At the Simon Wiesenthal Center, which was the target of neo-Nazi van- dalism earlier this year, Gov. Earlier this year, President Elias Sarkis of Lebanon ap- pealed to Islamic leaders to halt PLO military activity in his country. His plea was ignored. • "Two strategies char- acterize the operations of the PLO: the mingling of military forces in civilian populations and the un- hesitating use of terror not only against 'Zionists,' but damaging or defacing a religious facility such as a church, synagogue, cemet- ery or mortuary, is a felony. In the past, the offense was classified as a mis- demeanor. The legislation, authored by Assemblyman Mel Levine,-was sparked by the recent wave-of anti-Semitic vandalism in Los Angeles and throughout the coun- try. While praising the new law, Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean of the Simon Wiesent- hal Center, noted that, "this law does not alleviate the root causes of anti- Semitism and racial bigotry. However, it does prevent our children from one day saying to us, 'They didn't care . ." The first state to pass similar legisla- tion was Rhode Island where a bill was signed by Gov. J. Joseph Garrahy ear- lier this month. support of the Camp David Accords. Late last year the deputy head of the Jabalya council, Mohammed Abu Warda, was murdered when he challenged PLO tactics. This is how the PLO achieves 'popular iden- tification' with the Pales- tinian refugees. • "The 'moderate' Yasir Arafat, chief of the PLO, also heads Al Fatah, the largest component of the PLO which, at its meeting in Damascus last year, de- clared its' purpose in the words: 'Fatah is an indL pendent national revolu- tionary movement whose aim is to liberate Palestine completely and to liquidate the Zionist entity politi- cally, economically, militar- ily, culturally and ideologi- cally.' This is the enemy against whom Israel now defends itself. "All those who yearn for the day when Arab and Jew alike may live in peace, in dignity and in security de- eply deplore the loss of civi- lian lives on both sides of the border. Israeli officials have publicly expressed re- gret at casualties resulting from the Beirut bombing. (The PLO, by contrast, reg- ularly boasts of its killings of. Israeli women and chil- dren.) "For the Jewish people, whose faith holds that even one life is as precious as the entire world, the escalation of violence in recent days is particularly troubling. That is why it is important to understand the root causes of the conflict — and to iden- tify those responsible for its continuation."
