Simons' Avocation Carries
Him to Cadillac's Hometown

Lenoard Simons' love of
things historical has be-
come evident on two conti-
nents.
In 1974, Simons, who was
one of the principal fund-
raisers for the Detroit His-
torical Museum, travelled
to France where he pur-
chased Capt. Antoine
Laumet de la Mothe Cadil-
lac's home.
Cadillac, who lived in the
town of St. Nicolas -de-la
Gray, came to the United
States in the early 1700's
and established Fort

LENOARD SIMONS

Pontchartrain and a small
trading post that would
later be known as the city of
Detroit. Simons used
$20,000 raised through
friends to buy the Cadillac
home.
"A group from the De-
troit Historical Society
(Simons is president
emeritus) went to France
and dedicated the house
as a museum to Cadillac,"
said Simons, a long-time
advertising executive.
"We donated it as a gift
from the city of Detroit to
the town."
In 1976, the French gov-
ernment presented a medal
to Simons for his generous
act. It was given to him by
the French ambassador at a
ceremony in Detroit.
Two years ago, Simons
uncovered the first printed
map showing "le Detroit."
The map was published in
1702, within a year after the
city was founded.
Perhaps Simons' affec-
tions for Detroit history
stem from the fact that he
and the city share the same
birthday. Last week, as the
city marked 280 years of
existence, Simons cele-
brated 77.
