Jewish Activist
Flees Moscow
Prior to Trial
NEW YORK (JTA) —
Boris Chernobilsky, a prom-
inent Jewish activist of
.Moscow whose trial on
charges of "resisting a
representative of authority"
is pending, fled the Soviet
capital in defiance of Soviet
warnings not to do so, ac-
cording to the Greater New
York Conference on Soview
Jewry.
The conference, said that
according to information it
received directly from Mos-
cow, Chernobilsky's flight
underground late last week
is being regarded by Jewish
activists in the_ USSRas an
act of resistance intended to
underscore his belief' that -
the impending trial would
be a travesty of justice.
Chernobilsky, who first
applied to immigrate to Is-
rael in May 1975, was ar-
rested May 10 at a gather-
ing of Jewish refusniks in a
forest outside of Moscow.
Eye-witnesses reported that
Chernobilsky refused to
comply when Soviet police
ordered him to leave the
area.
A radio engineer' by pro-
fession ; Chernobilsky has
been refused- an exit visa,
along with his wife Leah
(Yalena) and their two
young daughters, on
grounds of "state secrecy."
Since his first refusal,
Chernobilsky has led Mos-
cow Jewish activists in pub-
lic demonstrations.
Old City Walk
JERUSALEM — The re-
stored promenade along the
Old City walls from the
Damascus Gate to the New
Gate section, now measures
six-tenths of a mile.
The path has been resur-
faced and guard rails in-
stalled. Hidden parts of the
fortification have been dis=
covered.
Entrance and exit to and
from the walkway are
through the Jaffa and
Damascus - Gates only. The
walk takes approximately
30 minutes.
