Lighting Sabbath
Candles Dates
Back to Moses
RABBI SAMUEL FOX
By (Copyright
1981, JTA Inc.)

Lighting of the Sabbath
candles is regarded by some
sources to be an ancient tra-
dition dating back to the
time of Moses (Pesikta
Zutreta). At that time the
Almighty is said to lave
bestowed a special bl ssing
on the Sabbath wh: ;h in-
cluded the spreae rig of
light on the Sabbath. Man,
who imitates his Creator,
does likewise by preparing
lights for the Sabbath.
Basically, the lights add
to the pleasure of the Sab-
bath. They avoid human
conflict which might arise
by people bumping into
each other in the dark.
Others take it to mean that
the Sabbath is a day of
studying the Torah so that
people be "enlightened" and
not subject to ignorant mis-
conceptions.
