Shearer was first trom- bonist and assistant direc- tor of the Stan Kenton Band for 13 years . . . His 19 bandsmen have been play- ing together as a group for the past six months. One of the most pleasant discoveries of the 1980 P'Jazz season was the Katalenic-Kwek band, a 21-piece group . . . Their smooth arrangements of jazz favorites and multi- colored original composi- tions by John Katalenic were especially well re- ceived at one of the four spe- cial P'Jazz concerts held during the Republican Na- tional Convention here.
