Knesset Speaker Warhaftig Retires, Served Since 1948
By UZI
UZI BENZIMAN
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Dr. Zerach Warhaftig, the
doyen of the Knesset, has
left the parliament ,after 33
years of continuous service.
At the age of 75, Warhaf-
tig, a member of the Na-
tional Religious Party, left
the political arena with ill
feelings toward none and
with a sense of calm ac-
ceptance.
From the vantage point of
elder statesmen and experi-
enced politicians — and as a
noted talmudic scholar —
he stands back and observes
the hectic arena of today's
Politics:
Warhaftig himself was
corn in Poland in 1906
and studied law at War-
of Poland. All escaped to
Shanghai.
He immigrated to Israel

archeological diving project
in Israel.
Anna Mary Washburn of
Boulder, Colo., is participat-
ing in the Caesarea Ancient
Harbor Excavation Project
of the University of Haifa's
Center for Maritime
Studies. The project is being
conducted in cooperation
with teams from the Uni-
veisity of Colorado and the
University of Victoria,
Canada.
A fourth-year student of
anthropology at the Uni-
versity of Colorado, Miss
Washburn wanted to corn-
bine her work in cultural
anthropology with archeol-
ogy. She became interested
in the excavations at
Caesarea after taking a
class taught by Prof. Robert
Hohlfelder, the head of the
Colorado :" team and
CAHEP's associate .direc-
tor.
A certified diver, Miss
Washburn is part of a
group of 35 Israeli,
American and Canadian
underwater ar-
cheologists, marine spe-
cialists, and students (the
largest underwater ex-
cavation team ever as-
sembled), who are
exploring the submerged
ruins of the harbor com-
plex of Caesarea
in 1947 and, as a leading ac-
tivist of the national reli-
t gious movement, he was in-
cluded in the "Peoples As-
sembly," the first semi-
parliamentary organ estab-
lished in 1948 in order to
prepare the first elections in
the fledgling Jewish state.
His research on legal sys-
tems had a major impact on
the formulation of the
"Election Law," by which
the elections are still run.
"One of the questions that
arose in those days," says
the veterian parliamenta-
rian, "was whether the law
should lay down restrictions
on the eligibility of candi-
dates who have a criminal
past.
"I object to such limita-
tion, arguing that it was
entirely unlikely that in
Israel there would ever
be 10,000 people (in 1948
this was the figure
needed to elect one
member of the Knesset)

Miss Washburn's work
for the four-week season has
been, in the main, par-

lift operations in and
around the harbor entrance
which are aimed at dis-
covering the periods in
which the harbor was used
and defining the construc-
tion of several submerged
ruins.
In addition, she and the
other student volunteers
take part in study courses in
the history of Caesarea, the
archeology of the land of
rael, basic under-M.1er-
archeology and ancient port
research, coastal geography
and oceanography, for
which they can receive aca-

DR. R. J. SCHECTER SPEAKS TO YOU ABOUT HEALTH!
PAIN IS THE WARNING
SYSTEM OF YOUR BODY
Everybody hates pain.
lems as well as associated pain and
discomfort.
So instead of listening to their \
bodies, many people's first inclina-
tion at the sign of an ache or pain is
to take a medication to cover it up.
This is like turning off a fire-alarm
making an attempt to put
out the fire.
Your doctor of chiropractic urges
you to listen to your body.

Never judge the
seriousness of a
pain by its location.
-
Listen to your body.
Pain is important to your well-being.
It is nature's early warning signal, a
life-and-death message relayed
through your nervous system tr4t
tells you when something is wrong.
As such, pain is merely a symptom
and not the cause of most health
problems. Therefore, the sensible
approach to health is not to merely
turn off the pain (or treat the
symptom), but 'rather, to find the
causes and correct them.
Structural
imbalance is the
underlying cause
of many types of
painful disorders.
,;;
.
Never judge the seriousness of a
pain by its location. The central ner-
vous system originates in the brain
and extends through the spinal col-
umn, reaching every major part of
the body., With more than three mil-
lion impulses generated in the ner-
vous system every wcond, an
anatomical or functional disturbance
can result in pain or malfunction at
most any point of the body. Often
the location of the pain has no
known correlation with the source

Chiropractic recognizes that struc-
tural imbalance is the underlying
cause of many types of painful disor-.
ders, for interference with nerve
control impairs a wide variety of
• body functions. Thus the doctor of
chiropractic seeks to maintain the
mechanical integrity of the body, ,
free from spinal defects and postural
distortions. He seeks to establish
normal function in order- to cause
body organs to function properly.
He seeks to enable your, body's nat-
f ural restorative powers to operate
at their best, so as to allow the

Chiropractic is a licensed branch of
the healing arts which is concerned
with human health and disease pro-
cesses. Doctors of chiropractic are
physicians who consider man as an .
integrated being. but give special at-
tention to spinal mechanics and
neurological, muscular, and vascular
relationships. A minimum of six
years of college study and internship
go into making a doctor of chiro-
practic, more within a specialty. The
practices and procedures commonly
employed are based on training re-
ceived in and through accredited
chiropractic colleges and certified
programs.
