Rabbi Explains
Humanist View

INDIANAPOLIS — The
Jewish Humanist Move-
ment, founded by Detroit
Rabbi Sherwin Wine, was
the subject of a recent arti-
cle in the Jewish Post and
Opinion.
Rabbi Wine explained the
philosophy of Jewish
Humanism saying that "in
general, we hold the view
that Judaism is not a reli-
gion, but it is a culture." He
said that Humanistic
Judaism is being following
in Israel by individuals par-
ticipating in study circles.
In the article, Rabbi Wine
offered two alternatives for
training Humanistic Rab-
bis; either through the He-
brew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion or
creating a program similar
to the one employed by the
Reconstructionists — tying
into a secular university.
