academic,

economic fabric of Arab
society, according to a study
conducted by Dr. Haggai
Erlich and published by Tel
Aviv University's Shiloah
Center for Middle Eastern
and African Studies.
The study, "The Univer-
sities in Countries of the
Arab World," which
encompasses six Arab coun-
tries, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq,
Jordan, Saudi Arabia and
Kuwait, as well as an ear-
lier study on Egyptian
higher education, indicates
that in 1975, the number of
graduates in all 22 Arab
countries was 760,000, and
in 1980 it was approx-
imately 1.5 million. By the
year 2000, 12 million
graduates are projected ac-
cording to estimates quoted
in the study. In 1975, uni-
versity graduates consti-
tuted only 0.5 percent of
Arab society, and by the
year 2000 the proportion is
expected to rise to 5 percent.

In the study, a passing
comparison of Arab univer-
sities to the university
scene in Israel reveals that
while in the years 1971 and
1972, 120,662 students
studied in those six Arab
countries, (about 270,000
including Egypt), 47,711
studied in Israel. While in
1978 and 1979 there were
310,000 Arab students in
those countries, (about
720,000 including Egypt),
and 64,106 Israeli students,
figures indicating little in-
crease in Israeli univer-
sities.
