Bruria Barish, creator of the Haddassim Youth Vil- lage camping facilities, near Natanya in Israel, re- lated the progress attained in this undertaking of bringing Arab and Israeli children together to ex- change views spend holi- days together and create a fraternity of spirit that has aroused admiration to the extent that her work is funded in large measure by the World Union for Pro- gressive Judaism. Mrs. Barish and her hus- band, Benjamin were here visiting his mother, Mrs. Lillian Barish of Oak Park. Mr. Barish, who made aliya to Israel upon their marriage in 1963, is a pa- tent attorney. Mrs. Barish, a native of Hun- gary, "with an eye and ear to the Holocaust," came to Israel in 1946. She is a veteran in nurs- ing and first aid capacities of the wars of 1948 and 1956. First introduced by Mrs. Barish in 1979, her camping program has gained momentum. From a handful of campers the number has grown in the last holiday period to 120. After the peace treaty be- tween Israel and Egypt the government did little to breach the gap between the Jews and the Arabs living in Israel, according to Mrs. Barish. When the program began, she said, there was an- tagonism on both sides. "Af- ter all, these teenagers didn't know anything about each other except what their parents, who were brought up with bigotry, had told them." "There is an increased sense of confidence in our volunteer efforts," Mrs. Barish said. The doubts and suspicions are vanishing. As soon as the actual friendly re- sponses became evident, parents became coopera- tive, children fraternize and created friendships." While not here to solicit funds, Mrs. Barish said that assistance will be welcomed as means of expanding the program. She can be reached at 36 Yehuda Hanasi, Ramat Aviv, and she encourages visitors to Israel to call her, at 03414961, to be guided into greater acquaintance with her project.
