NDAYS JULY & AUGUST -------

Gary Bertini, music di-
rector of the Jerusalem
Symphony, began his two-
year stint as music adviser
to the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra last weekend.

during his tenure with the
Jerusalem Symphony. "In
Jerusalem, we played con-
certs every day during our
wars of 1967 and 1973 — not
because we were martyrs,
and certainly not just be-
cause we wanted diversion.
"Music making under
those conditions proves that
people don't just want exist-
ence. Playing . . . was a mat-
ter of feeding the spirit."
