COPENHAGEN (JTA) —
A proposal to establish a
standing international
liaison committee between
Jews and Lutherans was
agreed upon at the conclu-
'ion last week of the first
joint meeting held under
the auspices of the Luthe-
ran World Fedration and
the International Jewish
Committe on Interreligious
Consultations (IJCIC).
The 24 participants from
nine countries at the two-
day gathering in Denmark
agreed to hold a second con-
sultation in 1983 when the
500th anniversary of Mar-
tin Luther's birthday will be
celebrated.
The program for continu-
ing consultation will in-
clude the publication of an
analysis of anti-Jewish
references in Lutheran
textbooks and worship
material.

pressed their deep con-
cern at the resurgence of

UNITED NATIONS —
candidates are
seeking to win the post of
secretary general of the
United Nations, currently
held by Kurt Waldheim,
who will complete his five-
year term Dec. 31.
Among the contenders
are former General Assem-
bly president Salim Ahmed
Salim of Tanzania, who ac-
cording to Newsweek mag-
azine, is being backed for
the top post by the 50 na-
tions that belong to the
Organization of African Un-
ity.
Newsweek reported,
however, that the strongest
contender might be Porfirio
Munoz Ledo, Mexico's UN
ambassador.
Because he represents a
non-aligned Third World
country, he could expect the
support of China and the
Soviet Union, the magazine
reported. It added that he
would probably be more ac-
ceptable to the U.S., France
and Great Britain, since he
is less militant than Salim.

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A
growing number of Jewish
students are studying
Arabic, according to recent
data from the Education
Ministry. Some 150,000
students studied the lan-
guage last year, compared
to 138,000 in 1979, 121,000
in 1978 and 103,000 in
1977.
At the same time, there
has been an increase in the
number of teachers prepar-
ing themselves to teach the
language; some 450 last
year compared to 350 in
1979 and 280 in 1978.
-.The Education Minstry
spokesman said the in-
crease in the number of
Arabic language, students
followed the ministry's de-
cision to encourage the
study of the language by
granting special incentives
to schools which made
Arabic part of their regular
curriculum.
Behavior is the perpetual
