HAIFA — The Technion
— Israel Institute of
Technology has maintained
its standing as the domin-
ant national institution in
technology, despite the fact
that other universities now
offer degrees in this field.
Seventy-two percent of the
country's engineering stu-
dents are enrolled at the
Technion.
Whereas the figure for all
the institutions collectively
has remained constant, the
Technion in the last three
years has experienced an
increase of almost 40 per-
cent in the number of appli-
cants.

Moslem Israeli citizens will
again be able to fulfill the
obligation of pilgrimage to
Mecca this year. More than
5,000 Israelis travelled to
Mecca last July, in line with
government resolutions to
expedite free access for all
religions to their places of
worship, whether in Israel

police who took him to court
where he was put on trial.
The six-month term was the
severest penalty for desec-
rating the Ramadan fast
