He spoke in Hollywood before a group of college and high school students about an earlier experience in his life when he, a Jewish boy, managed to survive the Nazi Holocaust in slave labor camps and exter- mination centers. He has the concentration camp number A5174 tattooed on his arm, a living proof of the dreadful past. Born in 1926, Clary was picked up with his whole family by the Germans in 1942 and shipped off in a cattle car to the east. Though only 16 when ar- rested in Paris, he spent a total of 19 months in forced labor. He is the sole sur- vivor of his family. When the war seemed lost to the Germans, he became one in a group of 4,000 prisoners in a death march of 15 days through ice and snow across the continent of Europe to the Buchenwald camp, which the leaders of the Third Reich regarded well within the inner wall of fortifications. Only one half of the living skele- tons arrived alive at the camp site. Clary, in this country best known as a "funny man," was asked by some of the students how he, a . survivor of the Holocaust, could have had the nerve to participate for years in the television comedy series of "Hogan's Heroes," in which life be- hind the barbed wire seemed to be full of horsep- lay and fun. Clary pointed out that the network show depicted prisoners of war who, under the Geneva Convention, were treated more humanely than were minority group civilians, especially Jews made state- less under the Nazi laws. INGRID BERGMAN has decided to accept the co- veted role of Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in the four-hour television epic of "A Woman Called Golda." Principal photography on "A Woman Called Golda" will commence in Sep- tember with a shooting schedule of 12 weeks on ac- tual locations in Israel. BARBRA STREISAND is making her directorial debut in a musical film based on Isaac Bashevis Singer's story and sub- sequent Broadway play, "Yentl," in addition to por- traying the role of the young girl who poses as a yeshiva I think I have learned, in some degree at least, to dis- regard the old maxim "Do not get others to do what boy in order to study the holy books. Set in Poland under the Czar of Russia, "Yentl" will be shot in its entirety in Czechoslovakia. BARBARA CARRERA was named best actress of the year for her perform- ance in the television epic, "Masada," in which she ap- peared with Peter Strauss and Peter O'Toole. The award was given by Nosot- ros, the Latin-Hispanic organization in Hollywood established to improve the image of minorities on sc- reen and stage. MEL BLANC, who has supplied the voices of more than 3,000 cartoons over the past 40 years, was pre- sented a certificate of com- mendation by Fay Kanin, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, at a special pro- gram saluting Blanc's con- tribution to animation art held recently at the academy. 1•011' EXCELLENT BANQUET FACIUTIES a rco's 7225 W. JERUSALEM — Loans granted to new immigrants for shipping and airline tic- kets will be converted to grants, automatically, if the oleh (new immigrant) re- mains in Israel for five years, according to new Jewish Agency loan condi- tions. new the Under guidelines, loans will be granted only in cases of fi- nancial need and for 70 per- cent of the allotted shipping and transportation expense. According to Raphael Kotlowitz, head of the Jewish Agency's depart- ment of aliya and absorp- tion, loans will be granted only in cases of demon- strated need based on a re- view of the loan application by a committee set up for that purpose. In cases of special need, he pointed out, 100 percent loans will be ap- proved but the new im- migrant will be obligated to repay 30 percent of the note.
