They are reminiscences of a tragic past, of his having witnessed the bestialities of the Nazi era. He is the survivor whose voice cries out for remembr- ance, for retention of the knowledge that a people that had • been glorified among the most cultured should have nurtured the horrors of mass murders. "Lieder fun der Fer- gangenheit," "Songs of the Past," represent his lyrical paean against the tyrannies. They recall the horrors, list the areas where the murderous tactics were per- formed. He reminds the genera- tion of the failure of man- kind to acknowledge the truth, to treat the bar- barities with the protest that was limited to the few who understood the suffer- ings of the Jewish victims. Dov Newman, Kiryat Giora, 18 Hakalanit Street, Haig Declines Invite When Israel Shunned When Only The Best is Enough Or Jehuda, 60200, Israel, is the address of the author and publisher. His poetry was published in Israel. It has inspired commenda- tions for the deeply moving impressions of an age that required courage and resis- tance. While emphasizing the part played by the author as a member of the un- derground anti-Nazi par- tisans, his many poems are in themselves im- pressions of resistance to tyranny — the resisting being in the adherence to faith and refusal to be to- tally destroyed by the be- asts in the ranks of the Nazis. Emotionally disturbed by the prejudices that accom- panied treatment of the Holocaust by Russia, the poet expressed his sense of protest in verses about the Babi Yar mass murder and mass interment of 60,000 Jews in the Nazi-made grave near Kiev in the Uk- raine. Newman also is an artist of the resistance. His poems are accompanied by numer- ous impressive pen draw- ings. Dov Newman's poems and accompanying illustra- tions collectively comprise a valuable addition to the lit- erature and art by survivors of the Holocaust. They add great value to "Lieder fun der Fergangenheit." Welcome to the Alexander Home. A warm, personal home set in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Serving those who need private care. UNITED NATIONS (JTA) — The United States, Canada and Norway boycotted Monday night a diplomatic dinner given by the Association of South- East Asian Nations (A- SEAN) in honor of the open- ing of the Kampuchia con- ference here, because the hosts withdrew an invita- tion to Israel. Secretary of State Ale- xander Haig, who was ex- pected to participate in the dinner, declined to attend after learning of the move against Israel. A State De- partment spokesman said that "in fairness and equity" Haig could not attend if Israel was barred from the dinner. The invitation to Israel was withdrawn by the South-East Asian hosts after they discovered that two of the members the Moslem nations of In- donesia and Malaysia — had no relations with Israel.
