Author Cites Jewish-English As Replacement for Yiddish NEW YORK — A new hybrid of English is emerg- ing to go with "Black English" and "Chicano English." It is being dubbed by linguists as "Jewish English." "Jewish English" has been studied by Sol Stein- metz, graduate of Yeshiva University - and general editor of the "World Book Dictionary." Steinmetz is also the author of "Yiddish and English: A Century of Yiddish in America," scheduled to be published late this year by Clarence L. Barnhart, Inc. Steinmetz discussed "Jewish English" in an arti- cle recently published in "American Speech: A Quar- terly of Linguistic Usage." In the article, Steinmetz said the people who make the greatest use of "Jewish English" are. Orthodox Jews, especially the Or- thodox who live in the, New York area. He noted that, although the modern Orthodox have become "by and large English speakers," many are, in varying de- grees, Yiddish-English bilinguals. Because many Orthodox youths study in yeshivas, this use of "Jewish English" is re- inforced, Steinmetz said. "Yeshiva faculties con- sist, in the main, of bilingu- als who regularly in- tersperse Yiddish and He- brew words and expressions in their English," Steinmetz said, "and the resulting hybrid forms are adapted and , internalized by their pupils." Friday, July 10, 1981 61 "In light of wat we have learned so far about 'Jewish English,' " Steinmetz said, "it would seem that we have in this vernacular more than just the barely percep- tible beginnings of a Jewish language. " 'Jewish English,' could be seen as a replacement of Yiddish by American de- scendents of Yiddish speak- ers, but it may also be more than that." Steinmetz said the whole subject should be given more thoughtful and thorough study. r To: The Jewish News 17515 W. 9 Mile Rd.
