Iraq Seeking
UN Position
WASHINGTON
Newsweek magazine re-
ports that an Iraqi may be-
come the next president of
the United Nations General
Assembly.
The one-year office, now
held by West Germany's
Baron Rudiger von
Wechmar, is due to be ro-
tated to an Asian nation in
September.
According to sources, Iraq
received some support for
its low-key protests of Is-
rael's June 7 bombing of the
Osirak nuclear reactor. The
sources believe that Singa-
pore, Bangladesh and Syria
will in the next few weeks
drop their bids for the UN
presidency in favor of Iraq.
