Driving by Young Israel
of Greenfield one may
notice two poles and wire
strung atop them at the
entrance to the synagogue's
parking lot.
According to Rabbi Feivel
Wagner, spiritual leader of
the congregation, these
poles provide the demarca-
tion of a portion of the
synagogue's eruv. The
five-week old eruv extends
through the synagogue's
parking lot and to the
grassy area east of the
synagogue building.
Rabbi Wagner said plans
are in the offing to extend
the eruv to Federation
Apartments to accommo-
date Sabbath observers who
must use walkers and
canes. Without an eruv,
these persons would not be
able to go to services, since
Sabbath laws prohibit car-
rying (a cane) or pushing (a
walker).
The eruv was set up
when a problem arose as
chairs were taken out-
side of the synagogue be-
fore Shabat and could
not be carried back into

Era Rozental, who have
been refused permission to
emigrate since making ap-
plication (in 1978.
Roman's grandparents

The Bar Mitzva's father
taught himself Hebrew and
attends clandestine semi-
nars on Jewish history and
culture.

the synagogue after
Shabat has started. Since
the eruv marks off a pri-
vate domain, the chairs
can be taken back into
the building.
At the same time, it
allows the children to carry
candy outside with them
when they go to play.
According to Rabbi
Wagner, there has been no
negative reaction so far.
"None of the questions
that apply to a
community-wide eruv apply
here," he said. He added
that Rabbi Chaskel
Grubner of the Council of
Orthodox Rabbis didn't
comment when he saw the
eruv. Rabbi Grubner joined
Rabbi Leizer Levin,
president of the council, and
Rabbi Leib Bakst, in not ap-
proving the city-wide eruv
when it was proposed at a
community-wide meeting
in March.

Asked if there were any
developments in the com-
munal eruv movement,
Rabbi Wagner said there
were none.

Bond Event Nets $120,000

Druze Problem
on Golan Heights

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israel will adopt harsh
measures against Druze
"extremists" on the Golan
Heights. According to Gen.
Danny Matt, the Defense
Ministry's coordinator in
the occupied territories, a
"tough hand" was necessary
because some elements of
the Druze population
exerted pressure on their
people not to accept Israeli
identification cards.

At a recent leadership reception for State of Israel
Bonds, held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Nat Fishman,
$120,000 was raised for Bonds. Shown, from left, are:
Rabbi Israel Halpern, senior rabbi at Cong. Beth Ab-
raham Hillel Moses; Nat Fishman, host and president
of the congregation; Hy Kalus, guest speaker; Lois
Fishman, hostess; and, Cantor Shabtai Ackerman.
