Israel's Deputy Defense Minister Mordechai Zipori said that they are intended as a reply to the joint U.S.- Egyptian military exercises held in Egypt recently or as a warning to Israel not to attack Syria's SAM-6 anti- aircraft missiles in Leba- non. Zipori told reporters that they were probably in- tended for both purposes. According to Cabinet sources the maneuvers were noted by the ministers but not discussed. Justice Department Moves to Deport Nazi Collaborator NEW YORK (JTA) — The Justice Department said last week that the gov- ernment will move quickly to deport alleged Nazi war criminal Adrija Artukovic, Minister of Interior and Justice in the Nazi spon- sored puppet state of Croatia during World War II. Artukovic, 81, who re- sides in Surfside, Calif. is ' accused of responsibility for some 200,000 deaths, ac- cording to official U.S. gov- ernment estimates. Allen Ryan Jr., director of the Office of Special Inves- tigations (OSI) of the Jus- tice Department said that the Immigration and THE HUNGER APPEAL: A noted American Jewish leader has now been elected president of a joint Catholic- Protestant-Jewish body which launched a major humanitarian campaign to help feed many millions of people — a fourth of the entire population of the world — who go to bed hungry every night. The man is Donald M. Robinson. He served as president of the Joint Distribution Committee from 1976 to 1980 and is now chairman of the JDC Board. He also holds leading positions with the United Israel Appeal and other national organizations. The name of the interreligious body of which he has become the head is "Interfaith Hunger Appeal." Most Americans are not really aware of the magnitude of the hunger problem and its consequences in about 90 Sports Stadium countries. He could be legally de- ported within 72 hours of his appearance at the regional office, but he may file a petition re- questing a review of his order by the United States Court of Appeals for the ninth Judicial Circuit which includes California. Such a peti- tion would automaticall., stay the deportation or- der. Artukovic has suc- cessfully resisted deporta- tion for 30 years. He was or- dered deported from the United States, in August 1951 and concurrently the Yugoslav government had been seeking his extradi- tion. In 1953, a decision by the Board of Immigration Appeals, determined that Artukovic "was a leading Nazi criminal during the second World War." However he obtained a stay of deportation that has been effective since May 1959 on the grounds that he would he subject to "politi- • cal persecution" if returned to Yugoslavia. The order by the Immi- gration- Board last week overturned the stay on the basis of a 1978 law which says that Nazi war crimi- nals cannot claim deporta- tion stays on the grounds that they would be subject to persecution. Rue Copernic Suspect Jailed for Jewel Theft PARIS (JTA) — A Spanish rightwing activist linked to the Rue Copernic synagogue bombing last Oc- tober 3, ahs been sentenced to 30 months imprisonment by a Strasbourg court for re- ceiving stolen jewelry. The suspect, German Sanchis Y Bernat, 41, and co-defendant Carlos Darder Garcia, received additional sentences for illegal posses- sion of fire arms. Sanchis was named by the Paris daily Le Quotidien last week as the terrorist who coordinated the Rue Copernic outrage on "con- tract" from unknown par- ties. He has been linked to neo-fascist groups in Spain. While French police agreed there was a "Spanish con- nection" with the synagogue bombing, they_ retain the belief that Pal€ tinian or other Arab thr- rorists were involved. The Rue Copernic inci- dent was not brought up during the Strasbourg trial. Sanchis and his col- laborator were charged with receiving $500,000 worth of jewelry stolen in Valencia and intended to be used to purchase arms for a fascist group in Belgium. No man was ever so much deceived by another, as by himself.
