Ross. Opposes Prayer Bill

State Senator Doug Ross
(D-Oak Park) has an-
nounced his opposition to a
school prayer bill being con-
sidered in the Michigan
Legislature.
The Moral Majority has
announced its support of the
legislation and warned op-
ponents that they would be
targeted for defeat in the
1982 elections.
The bill introduced by
Rep. Ethel Terrell (D-
Highland Park) would
make it mandatory for pub-
lic schools to set aside non-
instructional time for stu-
dents to engage in volun-
tary, spoken prayer.
Terrell introduced a
similar bill last year
which was passed by the
House, 61-28. That bill
died, however, because it
was never reported out of
the Senate Education
Committee, chaired by

DOUG ROSS

Jack Faxon (D-Detroit).
Ross said, "The issue here
is not the desirability of
prayer, but the need to
preserve the decisions about
prayer and other religious
matters for families and in-
dividuals. If we have Jewish
people, Muslims, Christians
— and various kinds of
Christians, at that — in our
public schools, what single
prayer on a given day could
possibly not offend one or
most of those groups?"
