Ryan entered the U.S. in April 1959 as the wife of an American, Russell Ryan, who met her while he was a construction worker in West Germany. She became a citizen in January 1963. The Justice Department case was based on her con- cealment, when she applied for citizenship, of the fact that an Austrian court and convicted her in 1949 of tor- turing and mistreating con- centration camp inmates. Orthodox Urge Rabbis to Reach Beyond Synagogue SPRING GLEN, N.Y. (JTA) — Two leading Or- thodox rabbis, asserting that the synagogue was weakening as an institution in American Jewish life, de- clared that rabbis must as- sert their influence not only in the synagogue but also in the general Jewish commu- nity to help make the synagogue once again "the dominant force" for Ameri- can Jewry. Dr. Norman Lamm, president of Yeshiva Uni- versity, and Rabbi Sol Roth, president of the Rabbinical Council of America, called on fellow rabbis to become more involved in more sig- nificant ways in those Jewish community institu- tions which have become strong forces in the Jewish community such as the fed- erations. They spoke at a session of the 45th annual convention of the Rabbinical Council, attended by some 500 member rabbis. Meanwhile, declaring that the college campus is "the disaster area' for mixed marriages and as- similation, the president of the Rabbinical Council of America announced a major move to reach out to college groups and RENT VIDEO MOVIES X12 5 Per Day Minimum 4 Days Membership Fee $35 for 1 yr. choose from 100's of movies, such as Ordinary People Elephant Man Popeye Somewhere In Time Young Frankenstein VIDEO PLIUq 69-2330 12 Mile at Evergreen She was sentenced at that time to three years' impris- onment. She also failed to note on her application that she had been a member of the Nazi SS. According to the Justice Department, had those facts been known she would have been denied admission to the U.S. for permanent re- sidence and denied naturalization. Ryan's trial, which began in New York in 1972, ended the following year with the revocation of her citizenship and the opening of deportation offer them advice and support to strengthen Jewish life in the univer- sities. Rabbi Roth told the con- vention that the Rabbinical Council would sponsor "Yavneh," a college campus organization comprised of Orthodox Jewish young people. On a related develop- ment, leading Orthodox rabbi Rabbi Walter Wurzburger, past president of the Rabbinical Council of America, asserting that Or- thodox Judaism is the fas- test growing Jewish reli- gious movement, declared that it was "high time" that Orthodoxy abandon a "state of siege" mentality which he said "may have been appro- priate for an era when Or- thodoxy had to adopt a de- fensive stance because it was widely dismissed as an obsolete religion — al- legedly incompatible with the spirit of modernity." Camp David Accords Backed by Mitterrand PARIS (JTA) — French President Francois Mitter- rand backed U.S. peace ef- forts in the Middle East and said the European commu- nity should help Washing- ton's search for a solution. Speaking at a European Economic Community summit meeting in Luxem- bourg, the French leader stressed the 12-month old European initiative should not be considered as the sole solution to the Middle East problems and advocated the U.S. styled step-by-step ap- proach instead. Meanwhile, Dutch Foreign Minister Christoph Van der Klaauw said that the European initiative in the Middle East can proceed alongside the Camp David accords and not in conflict with it. Consul Named JERUSALEM (JTA) — Yoram Ben-Ze'ev, one of the Israeli Foreign Ministry's up-and-coming diplomats, has been named consul in charge of information for the United States west coast area. He will be based at the Consulate-General in Los Angeles: proceedings. A warrant of the West German Fed- eral Republic signed by a Duesseldorf judge in March 1973 was trans- mitted to the Justice De- partment and she was subsequently extradited to stand trial there. The second-longest prison sentence pronounced by Judge Bogen on Tuesday was 12 years for Hildegard Laechert, 61, who ,was known to Maidanek in- mates as "Bloody Brigitta." Hermann Hackmann, 67, the former deputy camp commandant got 10 years; former SS Corporal Emil Emil Laurich, eight years; Heinz Villain, six years; former SS Sgt. Fritz Pet- rick, four years; former Lt. Arnold Strippel, 3 1/2 years; and Thomas Ellwanger, three years. Defandant Heinrich Groffmann was acquitted. Leaders of American Jewish Organizations ex- pressed satisfaction at the Dusseldorf verdict. Dr. Daniel Thursz, execu- tive vice president of Bnai Brith International, de- scribed his feelings as "not joy, exhiliration or revenge — it's justice." Several survivors inter- viewed by the New York Times expressed disap- pointment that stiffer sen- tences were not given out. Elliot Welles, a survivor and consultant to the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith, said Mrs. Laechert should have re- ceived a life sentence and that the lesser sentences for others did not fit their crimes.
